Why do we start to Hate some calibers?

I just do not "get it" about hating a caliber. It's like hating 5/16 wrenches, or 1/2 cup measuring cups for some ridiculous reason. It makes anyone who says they have a hate for a particular caliber look kind of dumb. Why is it even a topic? They all do what they are supposed to do, so use the one that does what you are trying to do.

I like them all, especially proven classics like 30-06, 7x57 and 6.5x55, but I have recently simplified/settled on 7.62x39 in a Ruger #1 as my go-to deer rifle and an IZH import as-issued 1954 Tula SKS as my primary plinker. I need nothing else in a rifle. All my shooting is under 125 yards these days.

Don't hate it but must say I have a strong dis-like for the 8mm Remington Mag.
It falls between a 300 and a 338 and improves on neither other than muzzle blast, recoil and just being a PITA to find brass and bullets for.
Done right though it is one hell of an elk slammer.

Many feel like you about the "big 8" They do dish out a fair dose of recoil in a light rifle.
However, your observation about being a great "Elk slammer" is certainly a fact.

My 700 Remington/Benchmark barrelled 8mm Mag will drive a 220 grain bullet to 3150,
and a 200 to 3300+, something neither a 300 Win nor a 338 Win can do. And...it shoots
both the 200 & 220 A-Frames under moa consistently.

I have enough brass and bullets to last me the rest of my life, so no issue there. :) Dave.

What's wrong with the venerable '06. I've hunted world wide with one and have taken 12 trophies with 1 shot kills in Africa. Easy to find ammo and to reload, tons of bullet combos available and as far as the critters are concerned, DEAD is DEAD. Don't need to chase some new fad cartridge just to BS with the boys about something new or about some new plasticy new rifle they have bought or dream about. Give me a nice walnut and blued steel '06 and stay out of the way.

The 30-06 is an awesome cartridge. It's in the Hall of Fame as a classic round for world-wide big game hunting.

X2....!
Love the .243/.25-06/.308/.30-06....have about 40 years hunting with them....meat tastes great regardless!!

The 6.5 guys and the internet. A 140gr 260 rem is A-OK but a 150gr 308 win is no good. I think these days there are some pretty good 30cal bullets to compete with the .264 cal bullets no?

For BC you have to compare the 264 140-143gr pills to the 30cal 212-220gr, especially when shooting gazelle at 1000m...

Correct. And to push the 220gr pills to their optimum rotation and speed requires a fairly large case-to-mouth ratio like a .300 Norma, which incidentally resembles a jumbo Creedmoor case.

Most of the time, people that "hate" a caliber are the ones that have never owned or fired one. There are calibers I like less than others, but none I "hate".

For example, I don't see much use for 30 cal magnums. I have a 300 WM, BTW. It's just that for hunting, there is nothing I can do with a WM a that I can't do with the 308. The 308 will kill anything in North America out to 400 yards, and personally, I would not take a shot at any game animal at more than that.

I'm a fan of bigger, slow moving chunks of lead, because you get less tissue damage than with the WhizBang Magnums, but I don't "hate" faster calibers.

I used to dislike the 270.
My very first experience with a 270 was marred with painful recoil. I discovered later that my friend was using excessively hot loads.
My next experience was pleasant when I fired a tikka T3 in 270 and then an x-bolt. No problem.

Havent met a cartridge i didnt like. Problem is there is so many out there and lots of overlap between cartridges. Makes it hard to justify owning many of them. Which is why i have settled on 7mm-08 for deer and black bear, and 30-06 for everything else. Took almost 10yrs of hunting to reach the realization that it was all i needed.
