Favorite coyote bullet

62gr Hornady hollow points in the .223 and 87gr V-Max in the .243 and new for this year and my general carry gun 123gr SST in my Howa Mini 6.5 Grendel in LSS chassis. Hopefully the 123SST will be more fur friendly than the 87V-Max as I have someone who wants the hides this year

Ive never used the 6.5 sst but 117gr sst in my 2506 at 430 yards iirc it was between 400 and 450 anyway blew a looney size exit out of a coyote. Starting velocity was just over 3000fps

How do you like the howa in the lss? I was thinking about going that way but decided on 250 savage instead. Still might try the howa

55 and 60gr Nosler BT’s have generally shot the best out of most of my rifles. Also the 55gr varmageddon’s are excellent but didn’t group as well as the BT’s for me.

They're starting at 2520 out of the Howa so I think they should be fairly fur friendly, at least compared to the .243,lol.

I'm really liking the Howa so far. The LSS Gen1 adds a bit of weight, I've got a fairly heavy buttstock on it and the mag release is a little stiff unless the bolt is open but other than that I love it. I am just finishing up the pic rail for the forend and then I am going to stick a Magpul AFG-2 on it and I think it will be perfect for general shooting from mainly sitting and prone. I am also making a pic rail adapter so I can mount the gun on my tripod for stand hunting.

i have found the nosler 55 gr bt varmint bullets to be fur friendly loaded to 3140fps in my 223. Also trying the 69gr lapua scenar's at 2930 work well so far

I have 3 mdt chassis setups. 22 lr savage mark2. Rem 783 223 and currently assembling a lss gen 2 for my 338fed. Love the mdt lss chassis. Think im going with a manners or mcmillan for my 250 savage though

I've been using the 58gn Vmax out of the 243's for the last 8 years. I've now got a deal going with a guy on the pelts and 4 this season I have blew the crap out of them. I will be looking for a better fur friendly round shortly.

Are you rolling your own or shooting superformance? If you want to dial it back a notch, 22-250 50gr superformance has exactly the same drop as the 58 in 243. Actually the 22-250 is 1/2" flatter at 500. About 200ft/lbs less energy at 200, and only about 100ft/lbs less at 500 yards.

The superformance are great in my 22-250, usually group around 3/4" so that is all I use. Had a couple splashes, and not good on fox under 100 yards

Two of my pet cartridges and loads... with "old timey" rims that give you warm, fuzzy feelings at the bench and in the field... I have shot fox, raccoon and coyotes with both, but if specifically targeting coyotes where shots may be longer than 150 yards, I use the Swift... having said that, out to 150 yards the Hornet is perfect coyote medicine and the 50 SP SX is a much better bullet than the 45 grain Hornet bullet... small hole in, Xplosion! No hole out... every time... very clean skinning job afterward.

.22 Hornet with 12.5 grains Lil' Gun and 50 SP-SX @ 1.78"
.220 Swift with 42.5 grains RL-22 and 60 SP @ 2.720"

The K Hornet with the 40 vmax is my favourite. It is much more pleasant to shoot than the 22-250 and I find that the 22-250 doesn't actually extend the range I get out of the K Hornet (this may say more about me than anything else), taken coyotes out to 330 with it and 200 is a cinch.

I have had half a dozen K-Hornets... still have the reamer in my shop, but I don't bother anymore, half a grain and the constantly quoted "extended brass life" turned out to be much ado about nothing...

Hoyt curious what you use for a bullet in the Swift.

Thanks for the tip on the Hornet. May just have to try that out.

In the Swift I am using the Hornady 60 SP #2270.
In the Hornet I am using the Hornady 50 SP - SX #2240

Those that are equiped should try the .357 158 XTP in their .358 or .35 Whelen, push it to about 2700. It kills very dependently.

I've used the .35 cal 158 HP and 180 SSP with reduced H4895 loads for many years... shot lots of coons and porky's with them and a couple coyotes... try the 180 SSP... I really like that load, covers a lot of ground.
