Hey Guys
I have a Savage 99 in 250-3000 that I bought about a year ago,it was supposed to be perfectly functional with some cosmetic issues. When I recieved it I found that the action was very hard to open from the locked position and equally hard to close. I assumed it was the built up crud and debris and put it away till I had more time.Today I spent about 4 hours taking it apart ( not the magazine) cleaning and polishing all the parts, everything seems in good shape so I used a little frog lube and reassemled. Its the same, the action is smooth except the last half inch of closure ( when you see the cocking indicator come up) you have to really squeeze it to close, it cocks and will dry fire but you have to reef it open the same half inch then its smooth. I definitely cant cycle it from the shoulder and the only other 99 Ive handled was quite smooth. Im hoping maybe someone might have some experience and ideas what this may be.
thanks Guys

Sounds like it once had a loose lever bite and someone hit it over to tighten it up a bit to much, you'll have to drift the lever back the other way a bit, it's trial and error to get it right.

thanks guys
through process of elimination I think I know what the issue is just no sure if it is repairable. i have the feeling the lever may not be original. I have been slowly polishing the lever where it contacts the frame lug and it is getting better but at some point it will stop pushing the bolt in to lock up. I might be able to get it smooth then add a little weld to the top of the lever or I might end up welding it shut and hanging it over the fireplace.
thanks again

FOR GOD'S SAKE , DON'T WELD IT SHUT - SELL IT TO SOMEONE THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING-my 99 has a screw at the back that if you do it up too tight it will act exactly like what you're describing- it's a 99c in 308, but they're all beasts of the same colour- i'd hate to see a good gun ruined b/c of ignorance

you shouldn't be even 'POLISHING"-what you're doing is removing the meat from the intersection of where the bolt meets the receiver and you DO NOT want to do that- otherwise she could blow open on you- look up the history of the 99 " and you'll see that Arthur savage DESIGNED it so that the bolt ( which locks up at the rear btw" so that then bolt is just a hair bigger than the receiver at that point- ie the bolt squeezes into the receiver- so of course it's a tough go- it's not a Winchester 94 or a marlin both which have smooth actions compared to a savage_

and you'll probably take the TEMPER out of the bolt if you get it HOT ENOUGH to weld it

thanks guys

When you obviously don't know what you are doing, why would you trust your conclusions? Get someone "competent" to look at it.

and who the hell asked you to get involved - he's had advice from of the most knowledgeable people on this board why did you have to stick your big noise in ?

People just have seen way too many rare guns "bubba'd" over the years. Guns that are not made anymore, and heirloomed in thousands of families. We are just sad when we lose a well respected gun to un-informed owner. Please try to pick out the helpful tidbits among the overprotective dad posts. Good luck getting it running well.
