what do you think is the most versatile cartridge ever made?

Who cares? On a typical year Alberta is tied for grizzly fatalities with provinces that don’t even have have them.

I care. It matters big time. There are grizzlies in this province that get shot in the face in self defence every year. Unfortunately these incidents get swept under the rug.

I know two people who this year alone had grizzly encounters that could have gone very badly. IE grizz inside of 40 yds coming with ill intent. They happen every year here. One was my hunting partner.

The question was killed or maimed. I know many people who claim to have had near-death encounters with bears, wolves, moose and coyotes, but they're still around, and none that I know of have scars to show for it. The people that were accidentally shot that didn't die (most did, but I know 3 that didn't) all have scars to show for it. I know one guy that was hit by lightning 5700 feet underground, and he has serious aftereffects that will last the rest of his life.

I know several people that have been attacked by both black and grizzly bears. I know dozens of people that have had negative encounters that could easily have gone very bad. Bear attacks aren't frequent, but they are common enough to not try to sugarcoat it and pretend they don't ever happen. I don't know anyone that has drowned, but I'm not going to try to convince anyone that they should ignore the danger of drowning when around water.

Do any of those people have scars to show for their encounters?

Well, I had two Grizzly encounters within 15 yards ..... yes!!!!!! And yes, those two encounters could have gone wrong ... but they did not! I believe it was the same Grizz that I met twice ... one day after the other ... while backpacking alone on a remote trail in the Rockies.

But that Grizz was as surprised as I was .... and he was probably as afraid as I was ....

I am not sure if his heart was pumping as fast as mine ... I only know he ran away twice. And I decided to ignore him twice ... and continue my way ...

Now, will I carry around a 50 BMG every time I go hiking in the forest .... ?

Probably not ... I think I can manage my fear ....

IMO, giving weight to bear attack fatalities alone doesn't begin to tell the whole story. Incidents or attacks would be nearer the full picture. But even then... I know of multiple incidents that ended poorly for the critter at close range- so far usually grizzly or cougars- most never reported. Hard to get a truly accurate accounting under those circumstances.

One that was reported, happened to my close friend- late in our elk season this year- he shot and killed the grizzly on a flat charge, under 10 meters. The F&W officers came ready to string him up, but left congratulating him on surviving.

How many Grizzly bears have you seen in the wild?

People who don’t live in it have no clue. I wish I could post the screen shot of the text my hunting partner sent me right after his incident. You get the full affect of that situation post haste.

@chuck nelson

Chuck ... can I ask you a question?

Are you afraid of dying in a car accident?

I obey the bloody traffic laws and wear my seatbelt if that’s what you are asking.

I’m not afraid of bears, but I’m not naive either.

That is great!!!

Then enjoy the mountains and the woods ... and feel the peace that they inspire ...!

Can we now move on to something else?

I believe this thread was about "the most versatile cartridge ever made" .... or am I wrong?

It's true. Until you've seen and/or experienced it, it's hard to fully understand.

I was down the ridge from my friend when he was charged, and on the scene within 15-20 minutes after it happened. (I shouldered my pack and started climbing at the shots, thinking he had a bull down & I'd help dress and pack.) Seeing it all laid out fresh is an eye opener, even when it's not the first time.

@LittleBoyLefty

LittleBoyLefty ... can I ask you a personal question?

Have you ever been in a deadly car accident?

Are you afraid of a car accident?

What does that have to do with this discussion? I've never been in a serious car accident, and take care to keep it that way.

I spend almost every free moment I get in the backcountry and inspite of being extremely careful, have been personally involved in, or very nearby, multiple charging/stalking scenarios over the last 15ish years. It would be stupid to ignore the lessons from those situations. I don't live in fear of anything, and will continue to spend as much time as I can in the mountains- while being realistic about the risks, and mitigating them in any way possible.

Anyways- back to the subject of the OP... ;) Make my vote for the 3o-o6 Springfield. (In a reasonably light M7o or Mauser.)
