This thread made me want to build a 7mm rifle pretty bad, not sure if ill go weatherby, STW or Rem. I just turned 100 7mm weatherby brass into 43 express though so maybe ill go STW as to not be upset about all the brass i HAD.

45-70
But can it shoot 400m? Probably, but not as easy as most mid bores.
I say a compound bow is the most versatile shooting machine you can watch videos of people shooting rats to stone sheep ( just being silly now, i bet very few people could goat or sheep hunt with a bow)

All good calibers, but I think to make the list, a caliber has to have been around a long time, no? The '06 certainly fits that bill, 300 WM has been around almost 60 years. The others have a ways to go, IMHO - although the 7mm Mag is pretty close.
The 45-70 is one of the least versatile cartridges for North America. Change my mind.

Ye gotta learn the arch of the 45-70 at the ranges ye intend to use 'er at like any cartridge. Lots of practice and good loads can pay off in spades using the 45-70.
As a super versatile number?... Nope. Too many lighter, faster & flatter shooting choices out there for most folks.
That said, the 45-70 is a beauty game dumper at ranges that would pee-off most "ethical shooting" types these days and is a preferred number in places where game
are hefty and dangerous at close distances. Where the 45-70 shines really well is in long range match shooting on steel or paper. BPCR shoosting fer instance.
The easy option would be the Rem Mag. Brass, dies, and factory loads are available for it everywhere. The Weatherby only exceeds it due to the factory freebore so dangerous over pressure is possible in a custom barrel if you try to match the claims. STW, RUM, .28 Nosler and a wide variety of wildcats actually do provide a notable performance boost but may not be worth the added cost and hassle, that is for you to decide.
