I have no idea what's what when it comes to optics. I have a stevens 200 in .223 with a 5-15x40 scope. I plan on using it for target shooting, maybe some hunting. Shots will be under 500yrds. Any suggestions what I should get?

How much did you spend on the scope? You should think about spending about a quarter of what you spent on the scope on rings and bases. That is, not exactly a quarter, but it will give you a rough idea what your budget should be.

What brand of scope do you have? You could just go with the same manufacturer for rings/bases.

Do you expect to take the scope off the rifle regularly? If so, you should consider getting "quick release" rings for a somewhat higher price.

Basically, it all comes down to a chain being as strong as its weakest link. There is no point to spending much on rings and bases for a low priced scope.

Also, does your scope have a one inch or 30 mm tube? That may affect what types of rings are available.

A one piece base is strong and looks cool but will cost you more.

Burris Signature rings with inserts are easy on scope tubes. The plastic insert adjusts to prevent damage to the scope tube if there is anything out of alignment. http://www.burrisoptics.com/sigrings.html

I'll second that, I love my Burris rings with inserts. No marks on my scope (from me anyway) and an extra 20MOA of elevation all for $50-60. Couple those with a 1 piece weaver base and your good to go for around or under $80

Talley makes the lightweights for Stevens 200, they'd be a nice setup. But, its a cheap gun so stick with the theme and buy some used, faded purple Weaver rings and bases with mangled screw heads from Supercub ;)

I have the Bushnell 3200 Elite for a scope (should have mentiond that, lol). I plan on keeping it on the gun for some time so wont need quick release rings.

I believe I need 1"rings but dont know if I should get high, med or low. As for bases..........????

On my Savage (same action a Steven's) I have a 3200 with a 40mm objective. My Burris medium rings clear the barrel. That was with the cheap two piece aluminum weaver bases.
