Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I tried last night to push it all the way out with a pin punch (I have a lathe so could make a longer pin I could peen or stake) - it would only go so far and then it stops so it would seem it should not pop out.

Perhaps there is an indent on the pin that the spring sits in - not sure. Gave it a pretty stout whack and it didn't come out..... feeling better about it now.

I took mine out so i could bend the paddle more straight, i dont recall seeing any detents or other forms of retention. I believe its soley the fit and the extreme spring pressure that holds it in place. Squishing the spring and paddle back in place so the pin could go in was a real hair puller lol

Thanks for that info

thats reassuring it wont be coming out, guess cost cutting in the design leads to this.

I currently has two grip contenders ordered to swap out the original which is way too small for my mitts. Whichever I like the least will gather dust somewhere, or I'll sell it for cheap.
Same for a siderail plate to allow some optic mounting.
But what I'm looking for next is getting that spigot off and putting on something less 'ugly' to look at. I had my fun with my 3D printed rifle-grenade but I'd rather just go for looks on the gun now. Therein lies my current problem, I can't seem to find anything other than plastic cans for airsoft online. Is there anyone who make good metal can sleeves? I'd ideally like to find one in the 'reverse-flashlight' style to end up with something like (this)
I have other mod ideas in the work, but this is the bit that's giving me trouble.

Has anyone with a folder removed it to try anything else? I am thinking about picking up a fixed stock due to the popular concensus that it seems easier to convert over, and back if so desired.

Would anyone be able to post a picture of the Type 81 completely stripped down? Like I'm talking barreled receiver. (Front sight can stay on) A friend of mine asked me to thread his barrel for him, but I'm just not sure if I can fit the receiver down my 4"~ spindle bore. Would hate to have him send it to me only to realize I have to remove the barrel. (Not sure I'm comfortable doìng that yet)

Wow u must have a big lathe.

Real big thanks to Murray 3-D for his videos. My type 81 is progressing real well.
The Moneyshot
Plum-colored bakelite grip is already fitted, and I'm waiting for a longer M6-1 bolt to arrive.

Looking good. It was later brought to my attention that bakelite does contain asbestos. So take extra care to not breathe in the dust

Indeed, I saw that too in the youtube comments a little while back.
Though, to be fair, asbestos particulates are really dangerous when under a certain size, as anything over that is treated the same by the body as any other airborne contaminants. I took appropriate precautions anyway.

UPDATE: The grip is one, and it's really sturdy and fits my hand perfectly.

love the cat.

The mounting sideplate I bought turned out to be a bust. I keep getting shafted by buying cheap, I never learn. All the more annoying since the mount I got is also pretty crummy. You can just feel the quality of the machining when you lock it in place (on my SKS' sideplate). Considered getting what Murray got (a VZ sideplate) to replace the dud but I FINALLY found an appropriate sideplate that won't look out of place. The mount might also need switching in the future. I see some good contenders on ebay but by 'good' I mean expensive as hell!

What was your process on doing that?
Been thinking about slightly reshaping the dongle-shaped lower handguard, and maybe staining it a dark-red to fit my dark-plum bakelite grip but that's all far from priority.
