Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Not sure if it's been discussed but anyone have a simple red dot set up? I think the iron sights are smart (I'll explain) and horrible/hard to use.

Horrible because the SKS style irons aren't good, IMO, for fine precise shots and it is difficult to find those small targets at distance.
Smart because that rear sight hood I think is designed for CQC. You raise your front sight post to meet that bar and the round front sight acts like big circle, hood bar cuts it in half, front post in the middle of that (hope I explained this right). I know people think it might have been for the grenade launcher, but if you try it out you'll see it might be for close shots as its intended design.

I haven't had much trigger time, under 100 rounds so far, so might get use to it more, who knows. Practice makes perfect I guess.

I never got around to doing it but thought the best red dot setup would be to use the rear sight as a mounting point. The width of the sight would handle a picatinny mount on the red dot but would require shallow v-grooves to be machined into the outsides of the rear sight. Anything mounted to the receiver not a good choice imo.

Alright finally done with the "black out" parts:

- ATI SKS top handguard
- Magpul Zhukov-U lower handguard
- DLC/PVD refinish on BCG
- Magpul AK grip

Where did you get the ATI SKS top handguard? I can't find any besides the vented ones....

Just picked up one of these myself from Firearms Outlet Canada. Absolute blast to shoot, but by God does she ever run dirty.

Using Barnaul 7.62x39mm, I'm grouping around 3-3.5 MOA at 100m off irons and the sights are pretty spot on vertically for 100 & 200m. One thing I did notice though is that I had to adjust my front sight post off to the left almost all the way to the stop to the get the shots on target.

With the front post center, I had to aim at the right target to hit the left at 100m. The barrel/receiver don't seem bent or anything, it just loves to shoot off to the left! With the front post adjusted to the far left though, it's now spot on.

Nice little commie gun.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who experienced this. My front sight post is maxed out right up against the left of
the sight housing. Barrel doesn't look bent so I dunno..

Anyone having an issue with the mag release pin walking out of the rifle?

Mine seems to free float on the left side and wants to walk out to the right. Won't be good if it drops out in the bush somewhere and the pin/spring/release disappears.

Trying to figure out how to stake the left side but there is not enough material sticking out of the hole to do it with a ball bearing.....

i would maybe try removing the pin totally and slightly mushrooming each end to give it a more press fit. sadly exchanging the rifle likely isnt an option and the importer may not repair it for you.

A very common issue, however although the pin walks out a ways, i doubt it would ever fully come out.

I tried last night to push it all the way out with a pin punch (I have a lathe so could make a longer pin I could peen or stake) - it would only go so far and then it stops so it would seem it should not pop out.

Perhaps there is an indent on the pin that the spring sits in - not sure. Gave it a pretty stout whack and it didn't come out..... feeling better about it now.

thats a solution too if there isnt an indent, you could always put one on by grinding it with a dremel while it spun in a drill.
