So, are there any rifles still chambered in this cartridge being made? What do people think of theirs? I haven't heard anyone even mention the 454 in so long I feel like it is completely forgotten.

Personally I think my Rossi 1892 in 454 is my most fun gun because I cast bullets for it. There's just something about gopher hunting with a 454 round ball doing like 500fps....it reminds me of hunting with a BB gun as a kid...but more messy...lol! But seriously, I bought it as my bush carry gun for work and such, and I have never had a better gun for the job. It's extremely light, hits hard, and fits in a scabbard wonderfully. So what ever happened to this chambering in rifles?

Yeah man i hear you, it wasa calibre that caught my eye as a youngster in some flash lever gun rifles....

i think it was a hard bracket to bust into in terms of realistically, what a 44mag, can do and what the 45-70 does lol.

proberly better availablility off ann the above in Canada as opposed to Aus.. it never took off here. i think i know of one scrub bull shot with one..

I don't understand why it isn't more popular as well. Maybe it is just a little too much for many 1892 platforms and not enough to justify in a 1886 when you have a 45-70. I'd love a 16" 454 takedown by someone.

I love both my m92 and my freedom arms 454's
I think ammo has alot to do with the small cult following of the casull.. 44 is cheaper , as well as 45-70.. and there close in performances.. the casull really only shine with the people who roll there own

I agree that this is probably it. But, the 44 mag has about 1100ft-lbs energy and the 454 has around 1800. They're not exactly like splitting hairs for a difference. That said, yes the 45-70 has a lot more power, but the M92 weighs 5.5lbs. The first thing I said when I held one was "Damn, this thing feels like a toy!" ....which it is. A very fun one. Lol!

I have a Super Redhawk in 454 as well as my 1892. Really fun gun and very accurate. I've been meaning to scope it one of these years just to see...but something just feels off about scoping a revolver.

I did score a brand new H&R 1871 45LC Carbine strait stock in 2002 at Le Baron, it's still unfired ( paid 195.00 i think then ).

After reading your post i will maybe send the barrel to be fit to shot 460 S&W / 454 Casull and 45 LC.
That should be a fun project.

Thanks for the idea. JP.

I have a TC 460 Katahdin. I also shoot 454 and 45LC out of it. I put this together as I also have a 460 S&W revolver that does the same.. Super fun rifle! The 454’s are fun to shoot all day long!

.454 Casull full power loads are absolutely brutal out of a handgun, even compared to more powerful handgun cartridges.

That probably limits its overall appeal somewhat, even if its not particularly harsh to shoot out of a carbine.

X2.

When I qualified at my range for my ATC years ago I showed up with 100 rounds of .45 Colt to shoot in my Super Redhawk.

The instructor who was the Pistol Chair at the club asked me why I was qualifying with that and I said 300 grains at 900 fps is more than enough for most bears at 15 feet...........

I think I shot 75 rounds to qualify. That would have been painful and expensive with full house .454 Casull shooting 300 trains at 1650 fps.

Is your 454 still your go to ATC gun?

Big Horn Armory offers their Model 90A in 454 Casull. Nice looking rifles!
Options incl/ barrrel length (18" std, 16" and 22"), barrel configurations (round, octagon), stocks (wood, laminate and cheekpieces), metal finish and iron or fiber optic sights.
Not exactly cheap, $3049 USD.

Check if your H&R is an SB1(cast iron) or SB2 (steel) frame.
SB1 frames were rated up to .44 Magnum which runs around 35,000PSI pressure. 460 S&W/454 Casull pressures run around 65,000PSI.
An SB1 frame might 'grenade' at 65,000PSI.

Big Horn Armory makes some beautiful guns! If money wasn't an option, I'd have one of their 16" 460sw models. 500sw is cool but the ability to use 454/45 ammo makes the 460sw one more appealing. Sadly I don't have $4000 to drop on a rifle.

It's a point of total frustration that in the time I was going hard buying black guns that Rossi did another run of stainless .454s and sold them all before I bought one... I guess there just isn't enough demand which I find odd considering how quickly they seem to move even at a premium.

I rather enjoy my SRH Toklat. While it's not something I shoot all day I really don't understand the reputation .454s have for brutal recoil. When I bought it it was by far my most powerful handgun and I caught on quickly. 240grns at nearly 1900fps or a 325 at 1500+. Significant but far from brutal.

Interestingly I got my SRH for the same reason but never did get my ATC for a variety of life reasons, one of the worst of which was employers being touchy about personal firearms in the field(I'm also a geologist). I figured the SRH in 454 was the best power to weight ratio I could get in a double action and still feel that way. The lever gun was because it was easier to carry legally than getting the ATC although once I got it I found it to be a really versatile firearm.

At 75 rounds fired I really don't blame you for going with the 45colt loadings. I put Houge grips on mine and it made a ton of difference over factory rosewood/rubber, almost to the point where 454 isn't really that bad to shoot anymore. That said I haven't done much shooting with it in a while, so maybe I just have rose coloured glasses on....lol!

If you are incorporated for doing geological consulting then your boss who has to sign off on your ATC application is YOU.

Don't underestimate the penetrating power of a heavy slow bullet like the .45 Colt. Skeeter Skelton reported seeing pass throughs on horses in some of the gun fights that happened around him in his youth.

This was just with a lowly .357 magnum......
