I currently own a Glock 22 (.40 S&W) with a LaserMax internal laser.

I find the .40 too hot for enjoyable shooting and am really only using in preperation for police college. The only thing I enjoy about my Glock 22 is that it's ergonomical and the internal laser is SO much fun.

My fiance and I really enjoy shooting but are used to .22 pistols. I want to keep her involved with shooting sports and buy a pistol for us both that we will actually enjoy shooting. (She will not fire the Glock 22 anymore)

I was set on purchasing a Beretta 92FS in the stainless steel finish (9mm) however, am dismayed to find they're now discontinued.

In all honesty do you feel that the recoil of a 9mm is significantly less then a .40 and it will reinstill our joy of shooting. I was looking at purchasing a Glock 19 but they're not available in Canada (until I get that badge number I guess) and buying the Glock 17 almost seems a waste of money as it's the exact same pistol I have now, just chambered differently.

The Springfield XD in 9mm was suggested, I can also get a LaserMax laser for it which I know we'll enjoy but I feel like it's very similar to the Glock.

Please help, give me your ideas!

Tim.

Do you have access to a professional reloader? If you can get your hands on some light-load .40 S&W, you should try putting that through your G22. I find it shoots flatter and recoils softer than factory 9mm. I've had them side by side, and everyone that tried agreed that the G22 with light loads was easier and more pleasant to shoot than the G17 with factory 9mm.

I'm certainly not trying to discourage purchasing another pistol (G19 with extended barrel is an excellent choice), but just something FYI when shooting your G22 recreationally.

I don't have the time to invest in reloading and people/mainly people at the gun shop.. do they even constitute as people?? (aswell as research on websites) keep telling how bad of an idea it is with Glocks. However, a good friend of mine reloads all the time and told me if I gave him my brass he would give me an exceptional deal. Something like 10 cents a round sound about right? To be honest, I am getting bogged down with the expense of ammo and my friend has been reloading for years, he actually used to do it for the local police service before they switched to Glocks (back when they shot revolvers!!).

I just saw images of the G19 with 106 mm/extended barrel and I don't know if aesthetically i'm a fan. Ridiculous I know. I'm going to keep researching it, maybe be one of those crazy people and get the G19 with extended barrel in Olive Drab! ha!

10 cents a round is an amazing deal, as long as they are professional quality. I paid $11 a box (when I used to shoot .40). And make sure they are jacketed, as you can't put lead bullets through a Glock. Otherwise they should be no problem, and will only cause less wear and tear on your gun. I never had a single problem with reliability putting thousands of light loads through multiple pistols. And it made them all a lot more fun to shoot.

A buddy of mine just bought a G17 in OD. I have to say it looks pretty awesome in person. I don't know of too many G19s in OD, so I say go for it. Especially if you already have a black frame on your full-size...

9mm.

I am not a .40 shooter, mainly 45 and 22's
but I bought a sig p220 9mm. ex police gun
from gummar awhile back and what a nice easy pistol to shoot,
and they are usally in the 500.oo price range tops

Personally I am more of a fan of pistols that have a traditional single action trigger, but the GLOCK 19 with the Bar-Sto barrel (and possibly the other aftermarket barrels as well, haven't tried them) is an excellent compact pistol.

This is me shooting my G17:

This is me shooting a friend's G19 with Bar-Sto barrel. Same distance, same ammo, same shooter. That group is 10 shots together (there is a stray hit partially under the ruler that is not from the G19). That is pretty much conclusive for me. The tight fitting Bar-Sto barrels make a big difference in accuracy. I like the feel of the G19 better than a full-size GLOCK as well.

Also, have a look at my comparison thread on 9mm pistols if you haven't already.

I don't know where I can get a sig in the area, I live in Hamilton, Ontario and I really want to be able to check the pistol out in person and really get a good feel for it. I've done some searches and reading since your recommendation and found it's a really favoured pistol so i'll have to do some digging and see where I can check one out.

I would say that you are in a bit of a spot. Usually I recommend to check out the firearms that interest you.

I can say that if you ask around a visit to the range with some local CGNers who are willing to let you try thier firearms might be possible...

I will also tell you that the SIG P229R 9mm is a very good little handgun...

P&D shipped mine to me in short order, if you're looking for a P229R 9mm.

Now I have the .22 caliber sig sauer mosquito which is made and designed to feel exactly liek the sig sauer p226 but only 90% the size. I love this handgun and no one can beat the sig sauer "to hell and back" reliability. May be a little on the pricy side for a new one. When I am ready for a 9mm I defiantly plan on getting the Sig Sauer P226! Very accurate and very reliable. If you don't mind a bit of a drive, go to gobles here in London. their website is www.gobles.ca , great customer service. I just all around love this gun. My mosquito cost me about 600 bucks after tax but it is in .22

Just my 2 cents.

mosquito

Slick, any issues with .22lr cartridges when you first got the gun? I was looking at it but read that it was real picky about what you feed it. I wonder if you had to break it in as well.

I am afraid that 9mm has more muzzle jump than .40 which you won't enjoy much. A .357 revolver allow you shoot .38spl and it is a very enjoyable round to boot. very little kick

Not sure what bullet weight/ammo you're shooting out of your G22 but you should try a box of ammo that's has a higher bullet weight than what you're currently shooting. You may find the recoil 'softer'.

A big +1 for the Sig Mosquito. My wife had a Mosquito and she LOVED it. 100% reliable with CCI Mini-Mags and it is a great training firearm! The reports of unreliable Mosquitos are quite old by now and Sig worked out the bugs over 18 months ago.
