Texas heart shot

well My deer was on the run and I got a clean heart lung on it. If it had turned I would have passed. Somthing is to be said about DTR shots.

Not a texas hear shot but i have gutshot from broadside , muzzel loader , running deer , TERRIBLE MESS turned the liver into pudding . I only shoot when it think i have a well placed shot now.

I took one of these shots on an Elk. I had about 30 mins of shooting daylight left on the last day of the hunt. Elk was running straight away, slightly uphill. range was about 140 yards. Shot entered about ½" left of the anus, and hit the spine just ahead of the T/loins, angled down a bit, missing all the smelly stuff, and went completely through one lung and was lodged under the hide at the front of the shoulder. Elk travelled only a few yards after the shot. Meat loss was minimal, bullet was 160 Partition from a 7mm STW. Not a shot I would recommend, but is deadly if they are hit right with a bullet that will penetrate. Regards, Eagleye

Glad I live/hunt in the west. Different goals for hunting. Looking for quality not quantity.

Well I guess I could certainly say the same thing!
I would probably quit hunting to if all I had to do was sit around waiting for the BIG one to come wandering out to me, but I don't understand why you want one, the meat is no where near as good to eat on an old buck & the horns are good for nothing more than postureing as far as I'm concerned

Ive shot a few running away in the head. I'd sooner miss them than clean a gut shot deer. These were meat deer. If it was a new world record, I'd be aiming lower.

You guys are missing my point. I've shot tons of Deer over the years. Only need one Deer a year for meat, mostly do a few steaks and the rest sausage. I don't have any head mounts as I'm not a trophy hunter. I do keep the racks though. I get enjoyment from the hunt. Out smarting the oldtimers is my goal. I can pass up several deer and come home empty handed and still have had a good hunt. 25 yrs ago when the family was young I'd strive to fill my taggs too. No slam on anyone, hunt how you want.

If your out to fill 15 or so tags why would you want to evaluate a deer??
All deer when butchered is venison :)
IMO 1 & 2 yr olds are the best eating.

Again, Huh?

Happy to hear it, but when the animal is moving, an inch more either way could've made a serious mess of some nice meat. I still haven't figured out how to make my bullets defy the laws of physics yet like some on this board.
(I.E. shot them in the corn hole while they are jumping so that when they come up it passes the gut and hits the vitals???????????.)

Oh well, if any of you guys come to central ont I'll take you out to one of the many club ranges that have a "running deer" targets set up, maybe you can improve your skill to the point you won't have to have a rest & a sleeping animal to shoot at :D

Maybe you central Ont. guys could travel west and see how plentiful the wildlife is here, maybe you can improve your control after seeing that you would have more than a single fleeting glimpse at game and you don't have to shoot game on the run.:D

Wouldn't get the same excitement shooting a game animal standing around waiting to die, might as well shoot a cow in a field I guess :)
Wonder how many times I could hit it before it hit the ground :D

WTF, this thread is about as piss-poor as it gets taking shots that could or would wound an animal ? WHY? are you guys at war with the deer and moose, if you dont stop them from runing away there going to come back with there buddies and mess you up?
taking a bad quartering shot is iffy nuff but shooting an animal in the ass-end hoping the bullet will find a vital and not a hip bone or a gut sack! BUT HEY CONGRADULATIONS all the new hunters on the board are reading this wondering if they could pull it off, way to pass on a tradition and turn it into a JOKE!

The THS is a messy shot not nessasaraly a poor killer, as long as you have enough gun. Now running is a different story most guy don't get enough practice and with all shooting if you can't practice the shot you should not be taking it.

The THS is a surprisingly effective bow shot but you have to be able to solitly hit the rear leg inside of the bone. A hit there will sever the femoral artery which is second only to the aorta so the animal will quickly bleed out.

Made that shot last year on a deer running stright away was wounded aimed high so I would spoil meat hit between antlers and wrecked them. If it wasn't wounded I wouldn't take that shot again

I've heard how well you can place a shot. You could likely get about 2-3 pounds of bullets into her before she fell over.....:D:evil::50cal:

done it on a couple black bears, with 175 gr X in 7mm Rem Mag. Both times the bullet exited the front of the chest

not a shot Id be proud to take on a deer or moose, unless it was previously wounded and was about to get out of sight

I guess they were small bears under 5 ft?:p

Let me get this straight, in the East running shoots are not only considered normal but are preffered? Nuf said.

Amazing isn't it!
Actually I would prefer a standing shot but then I don't trophy hunt so I can beat my chest  Prefer to eat tender one & two year olds:)
Perhaps if you guys had some "running deer targets" at your gun clubs out there you could perhaps manage a fairly simple shot too :D
HINT....it's kinda like duck hunting only the target is much bigger & slower ;)
