Glad I live/hunt in the west. Different goals for hunting. Looking for quality not quantity.
If your out to fill 15 or so tags why would you want to evaluate a deer??
All deer when butchered is venison
IMO 1 & 2 yr olds are the best eating.
I took one of these shots on an Elk. I had about 30 mins of shooting daylight left on the last day of the hunt. Elk was running straight away, slightly uphill. range was about 140 yards. Shot entered about ½" left of the anus, and hit the spine just ahead of the T/loins, angled down a bit, missing all the smelly stuff, and went completely through one lung and was lodged under the hide at the front of the shoulder. Elk travelled only a few yards after the shot. Meat loss was minimal, bullet was 160 Partition from a 7mm STW. Not a shot I would recommend, but is deadly if they are hit right with a bullet that will penetrate. Regards, Eagleye
Oh well, if any of you guys come to central ont I'll take you out to one of the many club ranges that have a "running deer" targets set up, maybe you can improve your skill to the point you won't have to have a rest & a sleeping animal to shoot at![]()
Maybe you central Ont. guys could travel west and see how plentiful the wildlife is here, maybe you can improve your control after seeing that you would have more than a single fleeting glimpse at game and you don't have to shoot game on the run.![]()

Wouldn't get the same excitement shooting a game animal standing around waiting to die, might as well shoot a cow in a field I guess
Wonder how many times I could hit it before it hit the ground![]()

done it on a couple black bears, with 175 gr X in 7mm Rem Mag. Both times the bullet exited the front of the chest
not a shot Id be proud to take on a deer or moose, unless it was previously wounded and was about to get out of sight
Let me get this straight, in the East running shoots are not only considered normal but are preffered? Nuf said.
