non-restricted and light weight black rifle options?

what are the light weight options for a non-restricted black rifle chambered in a caliber that will take deer humanely?

Several of us here at the shop shot deer at ranges out to 400 yards with Modern Varmint rifles chambered in 6.5 Grendel last year. All 1 shot kills. No reason a Modern Sporter in 6.5 Grendel would be any different.
With either a CFW or light profile conventional barrel a rifle can weigh in at around the 6 lb mark without going all out with the ultra light parts. You can go all out with weight savings but the costs go up substantially.

CSA VZ58 7.62x39
XCR 7.62x39
M10x 7.62x39
Stag 10 .308
BCL 102 .308
KEL-TEC RFB .308
Tavor 7 .308
K&M M17 .308

Just some of the many options we now have in Canada :D

My vote would ultimately go to the Stag 10.

An ATRS Modern Sporter with a 6x45 or 6.8 SPC barrel. Or even a 20" 5.56 barrel and shoot 70gr Accubonds or 75gr Swift Sciroccos (if it's legal where you live).

Edit: Or the 6.5 Grendel as above :). Shoulda typed faster. Lots of options for deer.

Agreed the MS in 6.8 SPC is a very good a NR setup.

Killed a few deer with my Maccabee SLR in 5.56, one with an APC223 - shot placement is everything. A 77gr Sierra HPBT works wonders when it's put in the right spot.

Agreed. If you have a faster twist barrel (say 1/8" or better) on a .223 you can use bullets heavy enough (say 68+ gr) to humanely take deer at ranges under 200m.

And with that all said - I suggest that the cheapest, lightest non-restricted "black" rifle you can get is the Keltec Su-16. The thing is a mere 5 lbs. It's got a 1/7" twist, so it's great to shoot the heavy bullets. They're not expensive either.

Biggest downside is twofold: The polymer receiver might not be ideal for -45 Celsius shooting, and the sighting options are limited - the "iron" sights are just acceptable, and the picatinny rail is plastic so don't expect the best mount for optics. But for close-in, it's an amazing gun for traipsing around in the woods since it's so light, and in the woods you won't be making 400m+ shots anyways.

If you want to build your own or have a custom rifle built any of the NR receiver sets work great for light weight builds. We have built some SLRs that were in the order of 6lbs.

I finally took the plunge and took a WK180 off a friend who was selling one, and tested it out last night. I'm really liking this thing. Highly recommended. It had about 600 rounds through it before I bought it.

Highly recommended for a black rifle.

Speaking of the WK180, I think Wolverine's new version comes in 224 Valkyrie. 90gr Fusion at 2700 fps should take down a deer no problem! Unfortunately, I'm in AB with antiquated calibre restrictions...

I think if it’s 7.62 it could take down a deer legally.

What's your hunting AO like? What kind of ranges do you expect? Heavier 5.56/.223 is great if you're under 200 yards, which is the standard here in Ontario. I know a few guys who use mini 14s and mini 30s too. But I just bought the stag 10 as my go to hunting rifle.

Cheapest and lightest would be a keltec SU16.
I’ve owned a couple, they have a really nice trigger and are MOA capable.
There were issues a few years ago with a few of the back of the receivers cracking. I haven’t seen anything on that in a few years,so maybe it’s solved.

I personally think this was due to reassembling wrong, after cleaning.
I had over a thousand rnds through my first one, with no issues.
And I used to load 10 pistol mags(100 rnds) and dump them as fast as possible.

If you buy new, you have full lifetime warranty.
Used you have no warranty. $800 5 lbs

Barnes 70 g bullets will drop a deer easily.

Your next step up would be WK180 chambered in .223 rem or Valkyrie.
Valkyrie will allow for a bit heavier bullet.$1100 7 lbs

After that your into MS / MDI territory.
You could jump up to 6.5 Grendel and be Capable of taking larger game as well as small.
$1900 to $5000??? 5.5 lbs +

Its sounds like the breakage is actually caused by the gas piston unscrewing from the bolt carrier. To address this issue Kel-Tec supposedly now peens the thread so it doesnt back off. A good way to check if your rifle is pending DOOM is to inspect the rear of the charging handle slot in the reciever to see if its a T or is more like a cross.
