the 270 came out in 1925. Not much really outperforms it 95 years later. We now have the 6.5cm. Not much different really.

performance wise, pretty similar, however 6.5CM ammo is made for firearms that are a decade old or newer, where the 270 has some pretty old actions to take into consideration for factory ammo pressure. Plus 6.5CM is short action
The .270 Win saami max pressure in 65k psi, the 6.5 CM is 62k psi.
Myself, I like the progression we have seen with cartridges as of late - or better put, these newer rounds have the same speed, burn less powder, less brass trimming on most, and more 'inherent' accuracy due to case design/powder burn.
Basically anything with a 30 degree shoulder (maybe even the 40) perks my interest.
If I was collecting, the relics are cool - but I am not into that at all, other than having my GrGrandaddy's 1894 32sp octagon restored to look like the day it came out of the factory in 1904 - and it will always be in the family
I don't want to or would like driving a 30 year old truck that is slow, burns lots more fuel - when I could drive a newer truck that is much more efficient, comfortable, and clean burning. Its progression. Save the 30-30's, 303's, and all those relics for the collectors or Luddites, or, those with limited means to get into the sport.

I've never been a fan of any Magnum cartridge. I've never seen the need for any of them for any of the types of hunting I've encountered. Now, that being said, I can certainly understand their desirability for mountain or plains game hunting. Flatter trajectory for longer range shots and still putting down a lot of energy when the bullet gets there is a desirable quality for those who live and hunt in those area's. I live in a very thickly forested region of the boreal. In my area, unless one hunts exclusively over open water or in recently cut area's, magnum cartridges don't offer much to the user except increased recoil, increased report and longer, more unwieldy barrels. To me, those qualities aren't desirable. But to others they're just fine. And that's okay. I'm glad we have options.
All that being said, I have a T3 in 300WSM with a 24" barrel coming in a few weeks. So maybe that rifle will change my mind about everything I've just written. And if it doesn't, I'll sell it or rebarrel it to 35 Sambar with a 20" tube, B&C stock, iron sights and a 2.5-8x36 VX-3i in quick detach rings. A heavy hitting little carbine like that would be right up my alley.
Magnum is just a word.Update to this post. The 300wsm moved on to a friend who wanted it more than me. But, I just got a T3 in 7mm Rem Mag in the mail yesterday. And something tells me that this one is gonna be a keeper. So I might be semi converted to the magnum owners club. Time will tell I suppose.![]()
