Coronavirus and its effect on food supplies.

My wife won’t let me kill any of the squirrels that forced their way into my garage and chewed up my goose decoys. I know what I’m eating if food supply is limited. There’s enough squirrel meat in my part of the city to feed a small village.

I live in the flight path of a huge flock (murder?) of crows that comes to spend the night 1k from my house.
Push come to shove...

I have been slowly building up food stock since mid January. We're at the point I need mylar to protect the amount of dried goods I have, that way tomorrow or 25 years from now I'll be able to eat it.
Saw a lady in shoppers drug Mart take all the remaining Lysol wipes.
Patient at work showed me a text conversation with his boss, who accused him of having it, and told him he needed a Dr note saying he wasn't infected to return to work. I read his reply, it was more wordy than this but he basically said he doesn't even drink beer, especially not corona, and he looked at me straight faced and said he never liked corona beer.

I am not worried about this virus in the slightest bit. People need to chill out. Since October, influenza has infected 45 million Americans and killed as many as 46,000 ( info taken from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The coronavirus has infected 90,000 people but is only responsible for 3,000 deaths. If you ask me, seems like the coronavirus is not even as serious of the common flu.

I agree but what I don't understand. Why are governments reacting they way they are. Something has spooked the government herd.

your numbers say:
influenza 1 death in 1000
corona 33 in 1000

Influenza also doesn't survive 9 days on surfaces, doesn't spread by aerosol.
We have vaccines for multiple influenza strains.
We've got generations and generations of genetic adaptations against influenza.
We have ZERO herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2.
We still haven't developed a vaccine for the SARS virus from two decades ago (At least, not a vaccine that is WORSE than having no vaccine at all).
If you actually buy into the "just a flu" line, then I have an oil sand mine to sell you.

Agreed, but when the herd gets spooked, lookout!

Thank god I saw this coming and bought lots of hand sanitizer and TP weeks ago. I only stocked up on TP because I knew once the "herd" got panicky, I would be stuck using one ply workplace sandpaper garbage to wipe my butt!

What I don't understand is my local Costco sold out of cheese and milk on the weekend. Don't these last a week or so? I under stand you can freeze cheese but cumon.

as long as you can keep it cool/cold cheese can last months

Considering the hardest hit are 60+... They may be banking on not having to pay out on many of those pensions at all.

Well, it may not be as simple as government NOT paying. When the federal fiscal deficit for 2019-2020 jumped by $15 billion, $10 of those billions were due to extra monies having to be paid into those deficient government pension funds. One needs to understand: The Governments of all 3 levels, municipal, provincial and federal, automatically assume that us, the ordinary taxpayers, are their piggy bank and have the backing of security apparatus to enforce it and to collect the money they want from us and hand it to them, meaning, raising taxes + they will borrow some of it and put it on the national tab and have future generations to pay for it, which is completely absurd since they indoctrinate the younger generations to elect governments that rob them blind. Dumb people elect dumb politicians who in turn implement really dumb social and economic policies that never end well. Stupid always destroys itself, nature works that way, the catch is net being around or part of it when it happens, which is becoming increasingly difficult.

Higher rates in Canada is because we are friendly with Iran. There are thousands of students, researchers and profs from Iran in Canada. Iran is being hit super hard right now. Lots of them took the Christmas holidays off to go home to visit family. People I work with had friends on the plane that was shot down. It’s the same flight number they take.

As many of you are aware, the coronavirus has hit Canada already. Cases have risen from 1 to 33 in just over a month. We have a rate higher than the USA (106 cases yet 10 times the population).

While the virus can be treated and contained, panic is not as easy to contain. Manitoba, Sask, & Alberta have not seen any cases yet it is next to impossible to find hand sanitizer. Line ups at Costco are already taking place here.

Shipments of storable food are in grid lock as the producers are getting 10-20x the order volume in. We would normally carry around 100 cases of Wise Company & 2 dozen MRE star cases. We now have none and cannot get anymore. It not the end of the world, but we will soon see food shortages in the coming weeks. Please make sure you have enough groceries in case your supper market runs out!

I told my wife not to worry though, the one thing I DO have is a LOT of ammunition!! :D

And in the end when it all turns to ####.... it isn't the guy with the most "gold" who wins (or the most hand sanitizer)...

The one who wins is the guy with the most ammo! :) LOL

I hear you buddy. Except I’m in BC, I have places to go where we don’t need power to survive, but ammo is helpful.

^ Lol I totally just made the same post in another thread. Completely agree, when it hits the fan, better to have ammo than toilet paper ha.

Yes, it is hard to reconcile Government reaction - and now private sector reaction (there are people / companies in London who no longer meet any visitors or travel) - with the message that this is just a serious Cold.

Whatever the real answer may be to the question of severity for the Virus, the Human reaction to it is real and we will feel it for some time.
