I bought a bag(50) of Winchester .300 WSM brass as my long awaited return to the bench, and I encountered one case with 2 dimples in the shoulder. They appear to be all the way through. Is this common?

I've had a few of those in NIB Hornady cases. They ironed out just fine when fired and didn't do it again.

Now, did you resize that case??? Was the dimple there before you resized it??

If the dimple came into being after you resized it, it's usually attributable to over lubrication and blocked venting in your sizing die. From your pic, you're also setting back the shoulder??? Maybe more than needed??

Dings are common in all brands of brass, its mass produced. Sure its going down shutes and falling off conveyors to rival Canada post.

Did you say it has a actual hole? I have never encountered that. A few so dinged that the expander ball gets stuck and i collapsed the shoulder, but never a actual hole.

I have had troubles with the w-w red/black 300 wsm brass cracking at the neck after very few firings. Otherwise the red/black w-w brass has worked well in most other cailbres.

I also shoot 300 wsm and bought two bags of newer production 300 wsm. In total I had 5 of 100 pieces with wrinkled shoulders or deformed necks with splits. I emailed winchester and they told me to send them the new bag of brass back to the canadian distributor. It wasnt worth the hassle. Poor QC. Its funny cause I bought 5 bags of 6mm rem win brass and they were all great.

Yeah that 6mm Rem brass you hooked me up with was good stuff. So was the 284 Win, and the 7mm Rem mag red black W-W brass I've used. Seems to be an issue with the wsm stuff, whether it was thick or brittle or....

I bought two Winchester bags of .243 brass last year and each bag had defective cases like you have pictured. It looks like after Winchester lost the contract to produce ammunition at our American Lake City Army Ammunition plant they fell on hard times. I'm 69 and the Remington and Winchester I grew up with is not the same today. The quality control is governed by the stockholders and they no longer make the best quality products. This may change as Winchester was again awarded the contract to produce ammunition at Lake City.

Below as an example are the case weight variations of .223/5.56 cases and Remington and Winchester are at the bottom of the list. I buy bulk once fired Lake City 5.56 and 7.62 brass because it is a better quality and uniformity than Remington or Winchester brass. As another example I have had Remington .223 cases with over .009 neck thickness variations and the Lake City cases are much more uniform.

Blue/White bag Win was good brass.
Red/Black bag is garbage.

BINGO!!

I worked with some Winchester brass for a friends 270 Win in the newer red and black bag.... GARBAGE!!

Each bag of 50 had several cases which had to be thrown out due to a number of quality control issues.
Creased necks like in your photo or oval or off center flash holes.

Winchester used to make good brass... Sadly they are about the my last choice these days.

I've read previous posts here and now have the opportunity to see if there is a difference in durability. I have 30 or so new of the blue/white and I actually bought a bag of red/black for 303br. Will run the same recipe's and in one rifle and compare. Gave them all the same prep treatment so we'll see.

The new brass is so friggin hard i Anneal it before ever using it ! RJ

Didn't notice that at the moment. One dinted mouth out of the red/black bag but that was it. I agree, not a fan of the brass but the blue/white came in a package deal and wanted to add to the amount of the same head stamp for this rifle.

Unrelated to this 303br brass, I did have a case come by my bench that had the same appearance as the OP has shown but I can't remember the headstamp. I don't know where I put the darn thing...probably shot it is what I am thinking now because I can't find it.

Did a ladder test this past weekend with the 303br blue/white with the o'ring treatment after a looong hiatus from the range and the bench. Felt great and it was therapeutic for me. Brass and results were terrific!
