Hey guys,

I live in edmonton and am trying to get some cheaper 20g ammo. Ive been hearing some stuff regarding 20g challenger ammo potentially being associated with barrel cracking. I am looking first for some trap shells - something in the #7-8 range. Cheapest i have found were those challengers for about 9 bucks a box. And next to that some stuff a bit more reliable around 10-12 per box. Anyone have any suggestions for a cheapish but good shell?

I will also be looking for some #2 for hunting as well. A shell that has done well for anyone in a 20g?

If anyone has any input would be appreciated.

Score makes 20g target loads.

I have never heard of Challenger shells causing barrels to "crack". I have been using 12g challenger target loads for years without issue.

Note they are all cheaper if you buy by the case.

Your not looking hard enough in your area where ever that is
$64.99 per 10 boxes here for challenger and we are not know for having good prices in the east. Federal 69.99
Cheers

Therein lies the problem with google.
There were some relatively obscure cases a while back of people having problems with 20 g Challengers in their sub gauge tube sets. Not the shotgun barrels themselves but a reducing tube inserted into the barrel to allow them to use 20 g ammo in a 12 g gun. I don't know exactly what the problems were but I think this is what you're asking about. I've found the 20 g challengers to be a bit snappy and maybe this had something to do with the sub gauge tube problems, I don't know but I don't hesitate to use them in 20 g shotguns.

I only wish that we could buy target loads for that price in Alberta. $80 per flat is a good price here.

As for the Challenger loads, they are the most commonly used loads where I shoot, and they seem to function in pretty much any shotgun.

I don't use Challenger 20 ga. with the tubes in my Winchester 101 because I get blown primers. Not an issue with Top Gun. I also do not use Challenger 20 ga. in my Franchi semi auto because they won't eject, again not a problem with Top Gun. As far as Challenger 12 ga. goes, everything from 1oz light load to handicap loads works without an issue in the 101, Beretta A400 and 693.

LOL but remember add 15% tax to my prices so getting pretty close to yours
Cheers

If you think those prices are high then you definitely don't live in the west. Rarely do you see Challenger or Federal under $80/flat out here ON SALE!!

I have no idea if high or not since I reload 100% and never buy them
Just know historically normally we always have higher prices down east for ammo and components
With the tax $74.74 and $80.49 so not that much better
Cheers

Picked up 100 flats of Challenger last week from dealer for the club and some members. Same price for both 12 and 20 gauge here. $65.00 per flat plus $9.74 tax = $74.74

Most of the guys are shooting the 3 dr Handicap loads.

All I Shoot in my 20 gauge 725 are the Challenger loads and no issues at all.

I'll bet the $64 and $70 A FLAT AREN'T FOR 20 GAUGE.

12 ga. and 20 ga. are the same price where I buy mine, @ $75 a flat all taxes in here in Ontario. Challenger, Top Gun and Remington Gun Club, I usually mix it up and buy a flat of 12 ga and a flat of 20 ga. total price for 2 flats is $150 and change.

But, there is no Provincial Sales Tax in Alberta......
I'm more interested in the barrel cracking rumour.

When Le Baron Sports was still a thing, I was getting flats of target loads on sale for around $50-$55, but then Obama happened. I'm pretty sure the Le Baron price is still doable for large stores but no body expects it anymore so we don't get it.

I appreciate all the feedback so far! Cheapest i have found is 89.99/250 rounds of challenger #8 at a canadian tire at this point. Next are the winchester at i think 95/250.

Anyone have a better place or price to get 20g trap?

A lot will depend on your location. Shipping would be a killer on any deal. Driving 3 hours each way might be worth it if you are buying a skid of ammo.
