So I bought one of these rifles, used, from a fellow member here. It came with a factory Mini 30 five-round magazine. I like the rifle, and accuracy is quite good, but I really do not like that mag. It is fiddly to insert into the rifle, does not lock in place without encouragement, and has the lock-open feature after the last round is fired.

It baffles me as to why Ruger chose to use this magazine instead of one made specifically for this rifle. The mag for my Ruger American in .450 Bushmaster, by contrast, is a joy to use.

Wondering if anybody here has used the Ruger 10 or 20 round mags (pinned to five of course), and if they are any better? Or is there an after-market mag out there that works better?

Doug

I've had mine for a while now and have been using Ruger 5/20 mags I got from IRUNGUNS. I prefer the longer mags as they are much easier to manipulate when wearing gloves and give you a bit more leverage in locking them in. They feed fine. I've been meaning to grab a couple 5/10 mags.

I want to buy a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39 but they seem sold out everywhere! I saw a video on YouTube with a guy who ordered a bottom magazine well for a .223 ranch that use AR mags and installed it on his 7.62x39 version... Using 7.62x39 AR mags in the rifle seemed to work very well!

I have had no problems with mine. I have had no issues with the 5 round mini 30 mags. And the bolt hold open bothers me not either.

Same here. The other day I bought five spare 7.62x39mm Mini-30 mags for my Ruger Ranch and they work splendidly. No complaints here.
Regarding the AR mags, they are pinned to 5 rounds anyway so I don't see any advantage there.

For the Ruger Ranch? No.

With this situation, yes

I'm just jealous I can't swap my rotary mags for ar mag in my 5.56 Ranch with flush magazines

Same question here, those are for 5.56 NATO, not 7.62 x 39, correct? And they don't fit a Ruger American bolt action rifle, correct?

Yep, 20 rounders pinned to 5 from Ruger Mini-40 —-> no problem.

who has mini 30 mags in stock other than i run guns????

Good question.

I did order some mags from them back in March and they are not here yet. If you decide to order from them, READ THEIR WEBSITE, and ALL OF IT, first. Starting with the fact that they are an American company, and their prices are in US$$$. Then read about two shipping charges, etc etc etc etc.

Doug, doesn't your .450 Bushmaster use AR mags?
Why not just swap out the magwell from the Bushmaster, and then buy some 7.62X39 AR pistol mags and enjoy 10 rounds at a time?

It's a bit of a pain switching back and forth but if your not shooting them both at the same time might be ok....

I do not know if the .450 BM can use an AR magazine. I don't own an AR-15 or any of the variants.................

..............but I would not be farting around swapping out the magwells.

And I ordered a bunch of the Mini 30 mags from IRG...........

Thanks for the advice, even if I am not following it! ;)

I think Ruger's choice of mag for this rifle is ideal...but, of course, that might have something to do with the fact that I have a box full of them. I've been planning on scooping up one of these rifles, but now I'm a bit unsure. Is the mini30 mag somehow more difficult to manipulate on this rifle than it is on an actual mini30? I don't find that to be a chore, but I've used mini's a lot for a lot of years. I can't help but think that you will get accustomed to it quickly and won't find it to be an issue...?

The five round mag is a PITA. I JUST got (today) the Ruger 20 round mags, pinned to 5, from IRG. It was a hassle and they cost me more than I was actually willing to pay, but anyways they fit just fine.

Please enlighten me. The five round mag is a pita but the 20 round pinned to 5 is not a pita? In both cases you have only 5 rounds.
