Until this morning I didn't even know these existed... couple questions
1- Are they hard on rifled barrels?
2- What's the effective range on them for gopher control? One page tells me sub-10 feet which doesn't help me. Hoping to use them around the farm yard.

Shooting them out of a rifled barrel give a doughnut shaped pattern with a large hole in the center, smooth barrel is what they a designed for. Effective distance is very short.

smooth bore .22's are out there henry just came out with an over priced one. if you buy any skip the cci get the crimped ones from Winchester or federal more in the box and cheaper most of the time

We had them as kids to dispatch pigeons/vermin in the barn. Pellets wouldn't go thru the roof.
Worked ok. They were called whiz bangs IIRC

pretty much what I used them for in a rifled .22 as well just had to be close. the famer where my uncle used to live used a .410 shell filled with sand to do the same job.

Was amazed when I found them a few years ago !!!

CCI with blue plastic cup - spread a lot and a couple plastic cups broke.

The crimped Winchester’s were good. At 10’ I had about a 1’ spread out of a standard 10/22.

I was shooting out in the bush and a nasty a$& bug landed on the box of clays. Told my buddy to watch as I shot. The thing disappeared and my buddies jaw dropped. The bug was 3” across and my buddy thought I had normal .22 loaded not .22 #12 shot!

A few years back, I found some from the early 1970's laying in the back of one of my gun cabinets. Took them to the range a discovered that they would go through a PPC cardboard target from about 25 yards. Fired from a Norinco M-93. Pattern ...... well a few hit the target but really would probably need a 10x10 foot target to really check pattern.

LOL man does that bring back memories of working on the farms as a kid. We used the 22 shot shells to control pigeons, sorrows etc that nest in the rafters of the hay barns. I would use the shot shells to eliminate all the birds in the barns because the birds excrements has bacteria in it because they're dropping contaminate the hay the animals eat and the straw they sleep on.

Side note: when I started working on farms I was 10-11 now I am almost 72. Yes the 22 shot shell has been around for quite some time.
Sorry birdman86.

From a smooth bore they work well. From a rifled barrel they really spread fast. They knock sparrows down well inside barns
I have some for 9mm as well. Horrible in my carbine but decent enough in my 1911 although they wont cycle

Henry has released a smooth bore garden gun. Nice looking piece but i have a 9mm flobert i use now. Much more effective and larger shot and slugs can be had

With a smooth bore 22lr the shotshells make great practise when shooting flying grasshoppers in a field. Really helps you focus on the target. Dragonflys are also challenging as well

You have a couple years on me tho I was hunting mice in my grandmothers country store back in the '60's.
I wouldn't shoot these out of a gun that I respected , the steel shot wreaks havoc on rifling that is why smooth bore .22's were developed .

As mentioned they're ok out of a smooth bore such as the lakefield mk1y I have. Effective range is bloody close, I'd refer to it more as fly shot than the commonly heard rat shot. Should work ok on Richardson's ground squirrels but I'd likely just pick up subsonic hps for the price and performance difference out of a rifled barrel.

I gotta try the crimped 22lr birdshot in my Henry GG.

It’s cheaper than the CCI and it may feed better. The CCI “capsule” type seems to hang up a bit on the crimp of the case.

I used them for very up close rat shooting, coupled with a night vision monocular taped on my squib. Try shooting at some cardboard, I never saw a doughnut pattern. Once I was boresighted and ranged it was some of the best carnival shooting I ever had, ridding my barn of rats. Fun!
