1911 or Glock 21

Pros and cons of both from my experience...

1911: pros
beautiful
ergonomic
no less reliable than 21
accurate

For the record: 1911 was the second pistol I ever bought, but I had to try a Glock... that turned out to be a conveniently sale priced 21 as I wanted a 45. I like them both despite what anyone else thinks either way: After a break in period, they both ceased having cycling issues.

Sounds like something wrong with your 21 or the ammo, as I have a Gen3 21 and I dont remember ever having a cycling issue on it ever. Bought brand new

I have shot a 1911 in .45 and didn't like it, but I guess Im a Glock guy, and it was only one sample Im sure I would like some others if I was able to try more different brands/models
 
I say 1911 if compared to Glock. I will say some 1911s can be troublesome. I have a $2500 custom made 1911 that will only shoot round nose bullets. Kind of madding but it is what it is. This is after 600 rounds trying to break it in. Part of this is the builder for sure. I have always wanted a CQB Wilson but never had the money when I saw one that was reasonable cost. There are a lot of guns out there better than a 1911 but a 1911 is a beautiful gun and every serious gun NUTz should own at least one.
 
Assuming that we're limiting ourselves to .45ACP, and assuming that we do actually want a full-size pistol, I'd take an M&P45 over both of them (a Glock 21 or a cheap 1911A1).

 
Buy the best quality gun you can afford. The cost of the gun, in the long term, is nothing compared to the cost of ammo. And you will have a beautiful gun to fondle. Not to mention resale and ease of sale.

I think the issue with 1911 is that design was loose, it was a war gun. What the new builders are trying to do is tighten up the design and still fit into the origional specs. Pieces are custom fitted to work and so on. Some achieve this some do not.
 
I prefer the weight and heft of my 1911 over a Glock. I know they work well, but to me any polymer gun just feels...I dunno, insubstantial? And as per several posts in this thread -- 1911s are just pretty, like a classic car vs. a soccer mom's minivan.
 
I'd buy a 1911 . Glocks work reliably and have been described as the AK of the pistol world but there is just something about the feel and the weight of a 1911 . if you want to spend the coin I'd say something from Springfield Armory or Kimber or get a Norinco and have it fixed up for you . I just love the feel and the look of a 1911.
 
As much as I love the look of a 1911, it would have to be the Glock for me. I want to love the 1911, and some of them are stunningly beautiful, but as an IDPA participant and SO, I have seen so many of them having problems that I just can't bring myself to buy one :(
I can't think of another type of handgun I have seen more problems with, they just seem to be way to finicky for my liking, and 1911 guys seem to always be playing with them to make them run better. This is just what I have experienced, and I have no doubt that with enough time, money and patience they are dead nuts reliable, I also have no doubt I will get a new one ripped for me by the 1911 lovers lol, but I can only speak to what I have seen.
I know when I pull the trigger on a Glock it is going to go bang

I’ve shot and owned many 1911s for 30 years. I don’t own any now.

I love the look of 1911s, pure classic! But I just can’t trust them. Like you, I’ve seen way too many fail.
 
A 1911 will be the last pistol in my cabinet if there is ever a need to thin the herd. My Glock would go early on not because I don't like it, just because it doesn't move me. My M&P would be there a bit longer 'cause we have history! I have never had any functioning problems with my 1911s unless we're talking about the 22 LR that is. I have used them to compete and shoot quite a bit. I shoot reloads by the way.

Have you ever owned a good one? Just wondering because I have owned a pile of Colts and I would trust my life to one.

Funny, all the good ones I shot in the 80-90s were Colts. They were good. Many were comp guns. Mine were not Colts. I had SIGs, S&W. But the ones I’ve seen fail in competition have been many brands including Colt. Have to say, a lot of the failures were ammo and operator related.
1911s for new shooters are arguably the most complicated system to comprehend.

If you saw my post on the Dream Guns thread, I would love to own a late 80s vintage 2 tone Wilson Combat with the melted BoMars. Always love the look when carried by guys like Chuck Taylor.

For me, a 1911 in .45 ( a must!) will be a collector safe queen, if I were to buy another.
