'The 1911- Myths, Lies And Fallacies' - Patrick Sweeney

I worked at the CIL ammo plant in Brownsburg, PQ. We made over a million rounds of ammo, every day.

Mistakes were made. Wrong headstamp, wrong bullet, too much, too little powder, etc.

The mistakes were thrown into a steel drum, by the shovel full, to cook off. Sounded like we were making popcorn. Very little blew out of the drum. Center fire ammo tended to blow the side out of the case.

Yeah, but try and tell that to some people who are sure that it will result in death and/or severe maiming.

Last summer I threw a handful of .22 rds into the fire we had on the range to burn garbage. Most cooked off after few seconds and I thought they were all done - wrong!

As I bent over to rearrange the fire, the last one went 'Bang!". We all know how loud a .22 rd can be from a pistol, well this was louder, like one of those good firecrackers we used to buy.

Now I only put them in a burn barrel where they still scare the sh!t out of people.

I was one of those scared ####less people, before I read this thread

By the way, Sharps, are you a fan of Massad Ayoob? Not saying I am, or not. Just asking.

22 would be the one ammo I would be careful with. Very fast powder and a thin case that could fly. I once cooked some off on a frying pan. It left dents....

Ok just for fun. Yes my reloads dummy test have bullet set back , a small bit.
Yes have used 13 pound progressive wound recoil springs and it all worked. Not fired 45 million rounds yet, will let you know later.
Have changed springs and used grease and mess around with buffers and hot reloads.
So far the firearm still functions and shoots. May kill it one day as I learn about 1911 in 45.
What does this all mean? Not much. Just that you can screw around a 1911 and it still shoots.
It is a interesting tool, so enjoy.

I've read a lot of his magazine articles and I have a couple of his books amongst a plethora of other books on combat/defensive shooting. He teaches defensive shooting and he was/is a cop with real life street smarts and experience.

I first read about it in a test of factory loads. Then I looked at my home made dummy rds (a mix of lead and jacketed) and was surprised to see set back in all of them.

I think that one has been beaten to death innumerable times !!! Jeff Cooper buried that one long ago.

So many variables to take into account - bullet type, velocity, what and where it hits, etc., etc.

But - no horse is so dead that it cannot continue to be beaten. Have at 'er, my friend!

I was quite honestly joking but didn't put up a smiley or a sarcasm emoji - I've wrestled with it enough in my own head to know that it will never be answered!!!

By its title, I was excited to read this thread. As soon as I got to the ‘bullet setback’ line in the opening post, it soured my interest. I knew the direction this thread was going to take.
But thank you OP, for your well intended thread. Just wish you’d have chosen a writer with concrete testing than selective opinions. Reads like a memoire.
