My factory VARMINT/HEAVY BARREL rifle shoots sub .75" all day! Really? Prove it!

I was cleaning out the basement and found a failed 1/2 moa challenge attempt target from when that rifle was all original and had the factory barrel on it.

I never did make the 1/2 moa challenge (came close but always pulled a shot or two) and this rifle sports a custom barrel nowadays.

Accuracy International AW 7.62x51 (.308Win).
S&B 3-12X
Issue Parker Hale bipod.
Shot prone 100 yds.

Groups: .402, .463, .467, .642, .692
Smallest group: .402" average .533"

Beautiful rifle. I added you to the successful list on the first page.

Testing after bedding the recoil lug, and skim bedding the rest of the action. Appears to have done what I hoped it would.

Howdy fellas, I accomplished this challenge today and I'm pretty jazzed about it!

My groups were shot at 105 yards from the prone position off a Harris bipod with a rear bag (which is actually just a sock full of rice). Unfortunately the first couple groups didn't land right on the point of aim since I was experimenting with new scope positions the night before and I had to re-zero that sucker. Nevertheless, I'm pretty happy with the outcome!

My rifle is a stock Tikka T3x CTR chambered in 6.5mm Creedmoor with a Nikon X1000 4-16x50 MOA scope. The only "upgrade" is a Yodave trigger spring. The load I'm running is 6.5CM Starline Brass (neck sized only, on its third firing) filled with 41.5 gr. H4350 and topped off with 140 gr. Hornady ELD-M bullets seated to ~2.885" OAL (about 0.020" off the lands).

I don't have a close-up photo of my rifle but thankfully I snapped a photo of my shooting spot that shows my setup! I ranged my target stand at 106 yards but I reported 105 yards as the distance from the muzzle to the target. My group sizes, in the order they were shot, were: 0.553", 0.627", 0.371", 0.713", and 0.580". I've really been enjoying these CGN challenges since they're giving me a solid and quantifiable benchmark to achieve, and I think my shooting skills have been improving as a result! Here's a few photos from my day on the range:

Now I have to try and complete the 3/4" hunting rifle challenge since I've failed it a few times, and maybe I'll eventually the the 1/2" challenge but I don't think my current setup is up to snuff. At least it's a lot of fun to keep practicing!

Cheers!

Heavy barrel ?

My GWLA/Heavy 22' Keriger M14 all USGI parts NM shoots .70 MOA , a semi auto battle rifle with 41.7 H8495, 168gr Lapua Brass load ,

Any bolt gun with heavy barrel capable to shoot less than 1 MOA , no need to prove

Great shooting. I have the same gun, but I’ve yet to play with it much. Your attempt was indeed a successful attempt, but for some reason I’m not able to edit the original post to add you to the list.

Thank you kindly for confirming that my attempt was successful, and for keeping this thread going. I don't mind that you can't edit your original post right now since no one (except me) really cares that I completed the challenge. I've taped that target up on the wall next to my reloading bench as a trophy of some of my best shooting to date, at least until I can improve further with more practice... Hopefully.

From my experience, the CTR has been a great rifle so far! Is yours also chambered in 6.5 CM? I've experimented with a few flavours of bullets and the most accurate (out of my tube) are actually the 142 gr. Sierra MatchKing, but they're hard to get a hold of in my neck of the woods. As long as it continues making loud noises and sending lead in the right general direction, it'll probably keep me entertained for a while.

Yes, mine is chambered in 6.5 as well. But mine is slightly different I guess. It’s the Cabelas special and has the set trigger. The regular trigger on it is just under 1LB and when it’s set it is 8oz. Hopefully I’ll get out soon and do some playing with it.

The Cabela's special was a real temptress, yours must also have the muzzle brake on it for extra style points. The 8oz trigger sounds like a real nice touch as well, I'm slightly envious of that addition. When you do get it out for a play date I'm optimistic you'll be in love! Stay safe and healthy in the meantime.

Here is my attempt bit miss read the original. These are 3 shot groups not the 5.

But something is working.

Necro bump, came looking for input on Savage rifles, tfs
Classic!...hundreds of firearms users claim this quite proudly. But yet less than a dozen have actually been successful. This was an eye opener!!

All groups must be 5 shot groups.

Here are the rules:

The rifle must be a factory varmint/heavy barrel rifle with no major modifications.

The rifle must still have the factory barrel. Aftermarket stocks and triggers are allowed.

**ALL GROUPS MUST BE UNDER .750"@ 100 yards/meters**

You must shoot 5 consecutive 5 shot groups on the same paper. There can't be any other groups on the "official" target.

There must not be anything on the target that could be hiding a failed attempt.

Your successful post must include the following:

A pic of the rifle and the rest that was used to shoot your targets

A pic of the target showing all successful groups with the group size beside the group

A pic of your smallest group with a set of calipers showing the group size.

-When measuring your groups be sure to measure the groups properly. This is a good example of how to measure your group. Measure the extreme outside spread of your group and then subtract the bullet diameter
IMG-20130211-00261.jpg

Your post must include all 5 group sizes (as well as written on the target. Sometimes the writing is to small to read)

Have fun and be safe.
