BCL coyote?

Shot my 20" SLR today, banging steel out to 300m.

Amazingly, the tiny hex head bolt (which I think is the same size as an AR grip screw.....oh god, is my grip going to shear off now?) didn't fall out, loosen, or break and the rifle didn't catastrophically deconstruct itself.

Guess I dodged the bullet.........this time.

Good stuff.

But... please get back to us after a few years of use. Also would like to know how much fun it is having to undue a screw every time to clean the firearm. Does it get old real quick or is it ok?

I really do hope there are no issues and it works great for you. I would want nothing more than to have my suspicions be wrong. But.. I don't know. I don't have the time etc to test out new stuff these days. I've done it with a few firearms already. It's fun. Just no time these days to take a chance on a firearm with something I'm suspect of.

I will also say that I have had many horrible experiences cross threading stuff, stripping screws and even had a few snap on me which was supposed to be near impossible. Been careful every time, yet if it can go wrong it does. I realize it's likely me, but I'd like to avoid more of that.

Have been observing the MD NR builds unfold from afar and people didn't seem to have too many issues with the full aluminum & steel thread insert takedown screw system.

PS relatively new to posting on here.. Sorry if I am missing some CGN etiquette. Lol

It seems like a good idea. The only concern I would have is electrolysis between the steel and the aluminum. I gather the steel is coated and not contacted bare aluminum to steel. Not an expert on this, but I have seen the result. I have the suspicion there has been no long term testing in that area.

Could be they coated the interior with cerekote and the steel with paint or cerekote so it will never be an issue. Would like to find out. Also again, will be interesting to see in a few years how it holds out.

It's unscrewing a bolt, not changing the timing belt on a BMW.

I've had it a year and it's been apart a half dozen times. It's not a demanding task to remove the bolt.

Could it be better? Absolutely. There's no reason it couldn't have been built with a captive cross pin. Is the ATRS setup better? Yep. I had/have no interest in waiting a year to get one.

With your concerns, you should not buy one.

Interesting.. I hadn't thought about the cathodic effect of the different metals.

I guess it all depends on how much wear and tear the surfaces between each piece get and how durable the coatings you mentioned are.

Lets hope the set screws themselves for the steel insert have no issues at the interface threading into the aluminum over time.. (https://www.instagram.com/p/B-hwqKFJASe/)

Never said it was complicated. Just a minor annoyance with a possible weakness that could present issues over time. Hence my concerns.

Wasn’t planning on buying one unless the concerns I have regarding the design over time along with it being a compromise at the start were shown to be unwarranted. I haven’t seen anything yet to alleviate those concerns. I’m in no hurry to buy something I won’t be happy with. Learned that lesson a long time ago.

Looking forward to the bcl coyote reviews. Always interested in the newest stuff.
 
Potential issues aside, I will say the way it locks up is incredibly satisfying....and in conjunction with BCLs new handguard system I dont think there is a more rigid or solid design on the market. Any MS I've handled was quite sloppy and needed bedding. I haven't handled any of the newest ones though so I cant comment on that.
 
Agreed, the new handguard system looks rock solid and should yield some interesting accuracy comparisons especially with a "match" barrel (I am assuming the ones they ship with will still perform well).

The only trade offs I see in the design are weight and aftermarket handguard compatibility (thinking WWSD path).
Although chemist did say they were going to be bringing in a few different options specifically designed for the BCL upper.

Just to clarify, I jumped in on the BCL pre-order (as much as they can be annoying, I can be patient) hence my high level of interest. Lol
 
Pretty much echo Stevo’s thoughts.
The lockup is much nicer than my bushmaster. Pins are more convenient but I do like the lack of a rattle (I know lots of ARs don’t have this my Stag 10 and fx9 are pretty darn good).
My slr is a mid 100s serial number and I am very happy with it. Had to file the mag well slightly, and the bolt catch roll pin is tight but otherwise I have no complaints. I imagine newer builds don’t have these issues.
The 1/4-28 screw has worked for decades in many firearms. Never had an issue in any of my Remington 700s and I remove them often enough for maintenance, tinkering, and stock swaps. Torque on those bolts way tighter than I do on the mdi.
 
Anyone gotten theirs yet? I'm hearing that the rifles are at least well into the supply chain at this point, don't know if they have made it to the customers yet.
Getting antsy, would like to see an actual photo or video

BCL only sent out 12 rifles the first shipment. 1 to each dealer so I doubt anyone has theirs yet

Theres lots of pictures on BCLs instagram account. You can view them without an account if you want to look it up. They look really good.

North Sylvia, the distributor posted about it, but they may have taken it down, as I can't find it anymore. Even if they manage one shipment a week, it will take a while to get the rifle out the door in numbers. I expect they will be able to up the volume once the Covid-19 situation has finally reduced its effects, but it is still anyone's guess when that will occur.
