What ammo are you rabbit-hunter-types using?

Hey guys-quick question.. My 22LR usage is limited to gophers, targets (reactive AND paper) and the odd barn pigeon. I've never hunted rabbits, and don't have any plans to start. (don't care to eat them, and I've tried it a bunch of times). Anyhow, I've offered to clean up a buddy's 22, mount a scope I found for it, load test it..and zero the scope. Labor of love for me, and my buddy is more of a load & shoot anything he has on the shelf. Fine with open sights until now but like me...the eyes don't allow for much of that anymore. :)

Anyhow, I thought he only used this gun for grouse...so I had lined-up all of my subsonic ammo to test hone the scope arrives. He then mentioned he hunts rabbits too, now I'm not sure if any subsonic load should be in the running. I suspect it's fine out to about 75 yards with good shot placement, just interested in knowing what you guys use and why. If you use any subsonic with good effect, I'd especially like to hear what you're using. Photos welcome of course.

Curious if something like CCI SV (being a solid) has been good for any of you, I could always put some hollow points in a bunch of those to improve the effect.

Thanks for taking a moment to chime in!

Cheers, and stay safe.

Many bush rabbits and quite a few jack have fallen to my 22. Any shell will work for head shots. Had a Browning semi takedown that only used shorts, worked very well for bush bunnies. If he is shooting jack rabbits at distance than a hv solid would be my choice

I use standard cci standard velocity in my bolt guns and 27gr cphp shorts in my pump and lever
No need to over think things. Bunnies arent that tough unless jacks are the bunny of choice. My 17mach2 and 22mag come out when i hunt jacks

Thanks guys-just regular old cottontails. :) I see the odd jack rabbit out where I hunt groundhogs, though not for a year or so now. Anyhow, I do have a good sense of how large they are..and no, I wouldn't attempt one of those with .22LR. In fact, the last one I saw flying through a hay field (only saw it's head bopping up and down above the hay) I thought it was a coyote at first. lol

If its head was bobbing he wasnt running full out. They run extremely flat and even at full speed. They can better 60kmh to as ive chased them thru fields with my old toyota. Cooked right they taste amazing. Taste like #### when ive tried to cook them

I use Remington Viper, its a 36 grain truncated cone bullet. Same as Yellow Jacket but without the hollow point.
I found that they did minimal fur damage to muskrats back in the day, so I started to use em on cotton tails.
I haven't seen any for sale in the last few years, lucky enough I still have around 1000 left.

As far as cooking them, I skin and gut them and then kinda break open the chest to make it 1 flat piece. Salt, black pepper and a bbq, tastes like chicken with a gamy twist. Your dog will be all over you, they can smell the wild meat and will be begging for a piece.
