2020 Wild Turkey Season Thread

Yes ticks are about, never really stop just slow down in colder weather.

I'm envious of folks who are permitted to hunt and fish. Our seasons have been postponed till May or later. I was also excited about our proposed turkey hunt but that has been pushed to next year already.

Southeast ON is getting very bad for ticks... two friends contracted Lyme's disease in the past couple years.

Well got my "first" bird today in southern ontario.... yes a week early... but not my fault that the tom got smoked by a truck... by the time I walked up he was dead. Managed to save 2/3 of one breast. Free meat is free meat. I am also not above roadkill when it is minutes old . Was a beauty of a bird too. Kind of a shame really. I have shot and been proud of smaller birds. Inch spurs and a 9.5 inch beard. I will be mounting fan and beard.

How far out into the field did you have drive the truck?:d

Well folks, we are fast approaching the spring opener. I for one am looking forward to some social distancing in a blind. So who is still planning on getting out in the field and chasing the elusive longbeard? And for conversation purposes to pass some time.....what will you be using this year?

I’ll be heading out with my trusted Mossberg 935 and will be using a combination of Avian X and Flextone decoys....Avian X breeder and laydown hens paired with a strutting jake for my main blind....and the Flextone jake paired with a feeder and breeder hen for when I may need to move around.

I look forward to seeing some photos this spring!!

I just called two toms into my back yard, doesn’t seem fair

Ha... I have contemplated that before... this one was hit by some one else. I was driving my main work truck hauling a trailer.... if I have the apprentices minivan maybe.... it was like 2 steps off the gravel on a 45 deg ditch. If I was in the minivan I may have not even seen it.

Turkey time is almost here in Ontario! My little 4 year old daughter is pumped! She was with me last year in the blind when we got a nice tom. She's looking forward to doing it again.

I sold my 10ga last fall, only have a 20ga and 28ga now. Sure wish I could use my 1100 Sporting 28ga, but unfortunately it's not legal in Ontario. Think I'll take old faithful. My Remington 812 20ga single shot that my dad gave me when I was a kid. Good heavy load of 4's or 5's will do the trick!

I've been actively turkey hunting for 6 years, and now I wonder why I let 30 Ontario turkey seasons pass by before getting into it. I can no longer imagine spring without turkey hunting. Even more so now with my 16 year old son.

Looks like I have 5 toms to choose from this year. A couple of dominant birds and a few followers. Also have about 6-10 jakes running around. Looks like flock has broken up at some point in the third week of March and hens are roaming in small groups of two or three. The group of toms also broke up and are now wandering solo. As of yesterday I saw one who was with single hen. Here are some pictures from mid March, just a few days before the group broke apart.

Question , hunting in Ontario , 5 years old 12 gauge , 26 inch barrel , 3 inch chamber , adjustable chokes and a range of about 15 to 50 yards .
Based on personal experience what would you choose for ammo
