Well - let's just say I need a rifle in 6.8...I have brass, bullets and dies.

Can one be built custom at a not insane price? Would a .224 Valkyrie complete rifle work with a barrel swap?

I built one with a savage action and a PPC boltface from PT&G, works as it should and with a slight bending of the magazine lips it feeds no problem from the mag

I purchased a Mcwhorter sako a1 off gun broker a year ago. Its so much fun. I restocked it and sighted it in this morning. I talked to McWhorter about the build and there was no extra modifications needed to the action. Cheap? No sir but fun as hell!!

Could I buy one of these: Savage 110 Prairie Hunter Bolt Action Rifle in .224 Valkyrie for $900 plus tax and have it re-barrelled to 6.8?

(I realize this is somewhat backwards these days - I could probably get a bit of cash for the .224V take-off barrel)

You can’t tell us that and then not post pictures.

Not to argue, but do the supplies you have justify the money you’re willing to spend on the rifle? And no offence, but in the end to be stuck with an intermediate cartridge in a “full” short action receiver? I understand some of these intermediate cartridges in certain actions, but when the action no longer limits you, would that not be a good time to step into a “full” short action cartridge?

Again, not bashing your plans or anything, perhaps just questioning the justification. If it’s justified to you, then heck yeah, go for it!

Savage is a good action to build on, with the right tools you can even do it yourself. I also like the Ruger American rifle for builds, it too has a barrel nut design and prefit barrels are becoming more and more common. Although, the Ruger does not have the interchangeable floating bolt head like a savage. You would have to track down a complete bolt with the proper face on it for 6.8. I do prefer the safety and the 70 degree bolt lift of the Ruger though. For the record, I own rifles in both actions.

I hope this helped, let us know what you go with in the end.
