Not to argue, but do the supplies you have justify the money you’re willing to spend on the rifle? And no offence, but in the end to be stuck with an intermediate cartridge in a “full” short action receiver? I understand some of these intermediate cartridges in certain actions, but when the action no longer limits you, would that not be a good time to step into a “full” short action cartridge?
Again, not bashing your plans or anything, perhaps just questioning the justification. If it’s justified to you, then heck yeah, go for it!
Savage is a good action to build on, with the right tools you can even do it yourself. I also like the Ruger American rifle for builds, it too has a barrel nut design and prefit barrels are becoming more and more common. Although, the Ruger does not have the interchangeable floating bolt head like a savage. You would have to track down a complete bolt with the proper face on it for 6.8. I do prefer the safety and the 70 degree bolt lift of the Ruger though. For the record, I own rifles in both actions.
I hope this helped, let us know what you go with in the end.
