well i decided to by myself a black gun,

I find myself yearning for an XCR, notwithstanding it's relative youth and the premium it commands for being non-restricted. However, with C-10A coming down the pipe, and other sundry importation issues I won't hold my breath.

The SL8 is just as accurate.

An old joke here. With or without the crack? :D That one never gets old.

I had a hard decision between the SL8-4 and the PE-90 Black target special. The PE-90 while almost $900 more has a few nice extras to offer, which don't include a cracking reciver :runaway:.

With the PE-90 Black special target, there is a built in picany (sp?) rail and the back up iron sites flip down so they don't interfere with the scope. I personally like the stock on this rifle, it is a folder, and there is a built in bipod with a swivel for leveling on uneven surfaces. The ergonomics are pretty decent, and although it is a heavier rifle the shape is fairly nice for handling. The slimmer forend fits well. All in all it's a nice rifle. This new version was exactly what I was looking for. It's easy to mount a scope for varminting/coyote shooting.

The final piece of the puzzle is the trigger. The PE-90 trigger is fairly decent right out of the box. It's not perfect but it's ver acceptable. I've heard not so good reports from the HK trigger.

I may someday own an HK SL8 as well but the PE-90 will be the first one I buy.

The PE90 is simply a glorified AK action, with a trigger that has an additional spring staging/stop.
I've shot/owned both and still have my SL8. It has an exceptional trigger right out of the box. There are numerous comments regarding this commercial trigger compared to the G36 trigger on the HKpro board. Everyone that I've read, other than the one comment on this board, is in agreement that the SL8 trigger is very good.

vz58L with scout mount and a decent scope and you're set to go.

cheap, reliable, durable, ammo by the buttload, surprisingly accurate

True, but it's a well done AK action. The machining is very good. In a country where 300 metre shooting is practically a past time, you can bet they wouldn't tolerate crap. Considering every male of military age has one at home and many compete with their service rifles.

It's ironic when you look back at the old AK gas piston system and now take a look at the "newest" feature of the AR rifles and it's suprise "a gas piston system".

Just because it's based off an older platform doesn't mean it's not effective.

I've heard from a few people that they preferred the Swiss Arms trigger over the HK.

Like I said it was a tough choice for me. I like the HK SL8-4. The cracking receiver is what mainly scared me off.
As you know Kolt I was seriously considering this rifle. Someday I may still get one :D.

You Swiss Arms guys sure are a touchy lot when reminded of the Kalishnikov heritage.:p
I usually save all my AK action razzing for RichLPS, but now I've found new meat.

Don't get me wrong, I mean if all that was left in the world was the 550 series rifles, I'd be satisfied. And for something non-restricted, what the heck, it puts bullets out the end of the barrel.:D

Hahaha, not really touchy about it Kolt.
When I make a decision I factor in as much info as I can get and make the best business decision based on that info. The winner for me was the PE-90. Close call though. I didn't own either rifle or any products from either company so there were no emotions attached. :D.

I picked up a "thumper" style attachment for the HK. That's what has kept me staying with it. All non-restricted, and a lot of fun.
Would I have a Green/Black special in my pile of toys? Absolutely.... They are a great rifle. I only have so much money to go around at this time.

WP, how's married life?

I tried the G36 Koldt..the trigger feels very spongy compared to the PE-90 and no way I'd take that over the PE-90. Regarding the PE-90 action, I think its more appropriate to say that its between a FAL and an AK action.

Talking about being spongy the PE90 trigger is consistently and precisely sucky. I don't know how people like a heavy spring loaded first stage with a light break so much. I am not at all in love with the PE90 trigger at all. I much prefer a good clean single stage or two stage AR trigger (or american style trigger).

The SG is a swiss AK - down to the bolt. SIG made no bone about it they were switzerlanding the AK and they did an excellent job, in addition to adding 2lbs to a light assault rifle to make it a 9lb target style recreational combat rifle that shoots 224 bullets on family days....the swiss arms is a nice rifle but it is definitely not worth the mystical reputation it has over all other. I own two myself but I understand and realize what they are!

Still, it is way better than the plastic thumbhole abomination that HK markets.

I found it interesting that people are so obssessed with the swiss 300m belly shooting on a bipod. How about the USMC that shoots M16A2 at 500m KD in basic with no articifical support.....no one sings praise of the M16.

Again as I mentioned, the G36 trigger and the SL8 trigger are different, and there has been a lot of dicussion regarding the differences. The SL8 trigger is a very good "out of the box" press.
And again, the Swiss action is absolutely an AK action. They just added the the spring plunger behind the trigger.

Trust me, you don't want to hear me sing.

It would be an awful boring world if everyone liked only one rifle.
