Appartment Defence Pistol?

Looking for opinions on this : Could I load some cartirdges, for a 9 or a 45, powerfull enough to cycle the action reliably, and yet have very few penetration, but pack a punch? Not necessarely powerfull to go right thru a body, but still powerfull enough for the bad guy to feel them VERY well?
 
Auto-pistols are "tuned" to handle a particular load, for reliable cycling. If you mess with the load, you should retune the pistol.
I prefer large mass at low speed for up close situations. I'd use a bowling ball at 300 ft/sec if I could, but 230 g at 850 ft/sec is a close second!:D

That's a myth. HP rounds do not reliable expand in any medium, not even water. Do not rely on projectile design or construction to prevent or minimize penetration. In fact pistols rounds penetrate more interior walls than 5.56 projectiles.

Could work. Why not holster your pistol and carry a knife separate?? I'd sooner lose a knife than lose my pistol which was attached to my knife.

As a QA professional I recommend having a look at the Box o truth web site. Read everything it is very cool.

5.56 out penetrates all pistol rounds .45 included, it beats them going through locks, walls, car door, plywood etc

How would a revolver loaded with .38 special 148 gr wadcutters at about 800 FPS be for apartment building defensive use? Would it have adequate bad guy penetration? Any idea how many sheets for drywall it would penetrate in the event of a miss?

Been to that site a lot. Notice test #12 the insulated walls. There is evidence that the m193 they were shooting was defeated by the plywood at wall number 3. Where as the handgun rounds penetrated all 4 walls. In test #14 the 5.56 penetrated all walls. Its not rocket science, anything pushing 850fps or faster will penetrate your home. That being the case, I'll stick to what provides the greatest terminal effects, some 5.56 or 12 ga. It is interesting to note that the light birdshot did not penetrate beyond the first wall. As I mentioned before, at close range its devastating to living critters. beyond social distances it can be stopped quite easily.

First, if you can't hit a target reliably at 10 yds, in the dark, with one hand, after doing ten 10yd wind sprints, you shouldn't even be considering the use of a firearm in this kind of situation. IF you can do that, then use modern, commercial self defense ammo. Ranger SXT's, HyrdaShok, etc. do not use handloads, do not use ball ammo.
 
CanAm has a nifty 8.5" mag fed 12 guage. You just need a lock on your night table drawer with the loaded mag inside, and about 3 seconds to go click, shuck-uk!
First one rock salt, second bird shot, third to fith, buck?

You can't legally fire if you don't think your life or your families lives are in danger. If they are in danger, why mess with less than lethal rounds?
If I am going to pull the trigger, I am going to do so with the intent of ending the situation. 00 or 000 for 1st 2, then slugs.
 
Ya, what was I thinking? I was thinking like a Canadian. ;o) If there is only one story to tell, it should be yours, not his.
