Hi,

I am posting this on behalf of a friend as I’m trying to help out.

Long story short, a friend had a Kar 98az in the family since his great grandfather brought it back from WW1. The different sides of the family weren’t on the best terms and along the way, the rifle was sold (with a few others). That certainly caused a lot of drama.

The rifle entered the market and may have wound up at a dealer in Ontario a few years ago. Who knows where it is now, but it should be around.

He still has a bring-back slip for the Kar98az, which he’d like to track down.

It’s a shot in the dark, but here’s the info:

Kar98az, 1915 Erfurt, serial number 7547c.

He recalls the stock being dark brown. I figure this post may help, as his previous efforts have failed.

Thanks :)

I had a 1915 Erfurt about seven years ago but for the life of me I can't recall the serial number. The fore end was cut down but the barrel was intact, and it was a very good shooter from what I can remember.

Best of luck in your search !

Appreciate it!

Update: the rifle may have ended up at Elwood Epps store at some point.

Also it was definitely full wood, he shared pics of him as a young lad with it. I hope it turns up.

The fact it was full wood the last time he saw it is no guarantee its still full wood now. I hope the community can help though! That would be quite the accomplishment if the rifle can actually be tracked down.

That’s a sad thought and a worry to be sure... I forgot people still chop pieces of history.

Do not have it. Any guesstimates when the rifle was sold?? Are we talking 1920's or 1990's? Goes to condition it might be today - would think the small ring 98's from Erfurt would have been very desirable to "chop up"to make hunting rifle in the post WWII era? I have a small ring 98 sporter - proof marks are German, apparently just pre-WWI - but it is done up as a sporter - no evidence of any military history to it.

Would have been sold around 2016 or 2017, so hopefully nobody has chopped it!

Have you tried asking Ellwood Epps themselves if they have a record? They once called me about a gun they wanted to buy back to sell to a different customer presumably.
