An epic sporting cartridge. The 7x57 mauser

It is, I think the fifth ever smokeless cartridge.
It's the 3rd ever rimless cartridge.
It's the very first 7mm cartridge
There's probably nothing on the planet it hasn't slain
128 years later it still gets the job done as well as the .270, .280, .308 & .30-06.

I like trivia:

The 8x50R Lebel, 8x57, 7.65x54, 7.5 Swiss, 8x50R Mannlicher, 7.62x54R and 6.5 Carcano definately predate it as smokeless rounds and the 303 British, 30-40 Krag and 8mm Lebel revolver may as well, that is 10 for sure, 4 of which are rimless. There were also many experimental rounds and variations.

It's also likely debatable where the 7mm came from; Mauser, Roth, Rubin, or somebody else. There were experimental smokeless cartridges down to at least 5mm.

I got a couple of 7x57's. A ruger #1A and a CZ 550. Mine are pretty simple compared to the examples shown above.

I have been looking high and low on the internet for a 7mm or an 8 mm Mauser and haven’t had any luck finding one I can buy. I show up on this forum for a few days and find people who have five or six of the things. Really nice guns guys. I’m hoping to track one down in the near future.

Here's a nice 7mm on the EE.

I'd want the original rear sight to be included, but not the scope. A smaller/lighter scope would be just fine, something like a Leupold M8 4x or 1.5-5

It's note worthy that following the battle of San Juan Hill the 7x57 pushed America into developing the 30-03 and finally the 30-06.
Basically ending the 30-40 Krag as a military round.

Soon to be classic 7x57,I have a nice crotch piece of english walnut for it too.
I dont think I will scope it .I will frost the receiver and oberndorf bolt handle and a gang of english express sights ,barrel band sling swivel and banded front. 21 inch barrel

Nice ..... You should start a progress thread. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be alone watching that with interest.

I had this 7X57 had built over 25 years ago.
Started with a Mauser 98 action and added everything else, I have plenty of other hunting rifles but this is always my first choice.

I spent weeks going to through the Brownells catalogue and trying to decide what I wanted and finally decided on these -
Steel checkered butt plate, 3 position safety, barrel band front swivel, 2 screw recessed rear swivel, bottom metal, front and rear sights.

^^ Very nice ^^

I like those 1.5-5s and may put one on mine after the load development is finished.

Thanks, all my hunting rifles for today have either Leupold 1.5-5 or 1-4
I think my longest shot ever in central/eastern Ontario was about 125 yards, so no need for anything more.

Very nice rifle. Everything balances into a great looking rifle.

The 7X57 has been in my top three of preferred hunting cartridges for more than four decades. It is a very well balanced cartridge for medium game at realistic hunting distances. I have had a couple dozen of various makes over the years, but currently only have two, a Ruger M77-R Mark II and a No.1-A, both with 22" barrels.

If there was ever a match made in rifle heaven it is the 7x57 and the Ruger 1A as built with 22 inch barrel.
Option for a 20 inch tube and it's the Number 1 RSI.
Option for a 24 inch barrel and it's the 275 Rigby 1A version (working on that one too but right now 3 is enough)
