The GSG 16 modification thread

Problem is alot of the airsoft suppliers are out of stock on pretty much anything MP5. GSG 5 conversion kits are discontinued. So you need to search high and low for one. But Irun was selling them only with a purchase of a GSG16.

Drop The Bomb here makes a GSG rail delete with the raised notch for the HK rear sight, so you don't have to mod it. But you will still have the raised squared section of the receiver, if you don't shave it.

FYI there isn't any replacement recievers. Only way is buying another, or sucking up to BL and putting in a claim. But they don't like the GSG 5 kits. Because I heard Nothing on my service claim on my other.

My GSG with a DTB rail delete. I have a more authentic delete on it. With the slightly raised alignment notch. Mount you can get airsoft ones, but they needed to be modded to work. Plus I don't like metal clamped onto plastic. With not much there to grab onto, the more authentic mounts have narrow claws that bite in.

Nice job.

I disagree with use of a clamp mount.

I filed mine to match the contour of the GSG, and found with the 3D rail this is by far the most rigid set up I could find. There is simply no strength with a rail only mount. My 3D filler is flat so I could get the clamp mount way low against the receiver.

The first clamp mount I tried had less than 50% of the clamping area, this mount is better and the printed filler added much more support on sides of the case halves.

Anyways just my 2 cents.

Plus our 3D printer guy Peter is a genius, he just printed me a 10/22 short mag extension so I can do mag swaps easier. :)

Wow both those builds look fantastic guys!

So from what I gather I'm looking for a CYMA stock, what about hg and lower? Also what mount is that Randy?

Yes the CYMA stock takes the least amount of fitting for sure.

I tried two types of rail mounts, the first lacked clamping area on the claws so I did not use it.

This is what I used.

https://www.amazon.ca/Higoo-Scope-M...unt&qid=1593877098&sprefix=mp5,aps,217&sr=8-9

This is what I want, but too costly.

You will need a low 3D printed rail filler to use a clamp mount.

And here is my 10/22 with Drop The Bomb magazine printed extension, as short guns matter. :)

Some use airsoft lowers I bought one of the last GSG5 kits in Canada, the front grip is a CYMA, all from Tiger111, but Covid messed up delivery times, but to source from Canada of the US from Airsoft companies.

Any of you guys do your own barrel swap? I bought a 9" barrel from dlask thinking it would be like swapping barrels on a 10/22 but may have bitten off more than I can chew lol

Firstly I'm having a hell of a time getting the original barrel out of the block it's mounted in. I took out the tiny hex set screw from the bottom, after that the barrel should just unscrew right?

Secondly I didn't realise I'd have to chamfer the feed ramp and notch the barrel for the extractor. If I can at least get the short barrel threaded in I might take it to a local gunsmith for that, if not I guess I'm sending the gun to Dlask in shame haha

Also depends on the mount you use. The one I had issues with, was the one you said lacked clamping area. 4 narrow metal clamps on plastic, a good hit and its going to tear the plastic.

If you use a much wider claw, it would be better. I tried another style, but you needed to Dremel alot to get it to clamp, and then dealt with the mount crab walking. The clamps were one, so you had to Dremel the bridge part of the metal off, to make it 4 separate claws, then you had to sand them down because they didn't lift up enough to clamp.

The slightly raised portion of the GSG 16 receiver plays havoc on mounting MP5 mounts.

Well lower is the GSG 5 kit, Sky52 modified an airsoft one.

Yeah you’re right, Fire Support is out of stock. The hunt continues!

Which brand did you buy? Is it decent quality?

ICS, seems like quality for what it is.

the height of the drum doesn't move even on the real thing.

Yes it does.

Hmm. Never really paid attention to my norc mp5. I always thought that the different "window size" on the diopter is what dictates the range setting much like the rear sight on an AR.

Ics lower is THE only lower that fits, most of the modern airsoft lower lacks the rear take down pin hole so it will not work with the GSG. And the ICS lowers takes minimum amount of modding. All you had to do is enlarge the safety selector hole and the grip screw hole so the trigger mount can mount to it. There is also that blanked serial number plate, you can either cut the lower to accommodate it or simply cutting that plate off the trigger housing.

Once international flights have resumed, im going back to hong kong to do some errands, see if i can still pick up a few lowers.

The HK bug has bitten me so i need some G36 parts too for my other gun.

I have the ICS SEF lower and wouldn't go back to the GSG lower. Looks so much better that the 16 stock lower.

Are you doing the factory HK safety mod to replace the GSG plastic safety switch?

I just ordered the HK metal MP5 SEC safety for the polymer housing to use with my ICS SEC

Im not doing the safety mod, i rarely uses the safety on any of my guns. Its either shooting or mag out action open. Plus the gsg isnt exactly a run n gun kinda firearm.

Anyone ordered GSG 16 parts from hard line tactical? How’s the parts and fit and finish?

I just got a few things from them. It's all 3D printed then sanded/painted. Not a flawless finish but very solid feeling and fairly priced. Turnaround was a couple weeks. I'll post a pic after I install in the next few days

***UPDATE***

Took my GSG16 to a buddy's place today and had a few friends put my build thru the places!

OkayShooter, I was completely wrong you were right. clamp mounts DO NOT WORK!

We pounded the rounds thru this gun, magazines, drum, over 750 rounds today!

Here is my son just loving the build with his 10/22 shorty.

In the sun, with the gun getting hot the clamping of the mount started to shift changing the POI after a few hundred rounds! My gunsmith friend said the clamp idea will not work ever!!! He is going to mount a metal picatinny rail with bolts, nuts, and washers ground flat using the 3D printed rail.

The rear HK style sight is too high as well. The front post of the GSG5 kit needs to be raised or the rear lowered. So the sighting systems of my build were a failure!

So have to do some more thinking.

The short Dlask barrel with a brake is FRIGGIN LOUD!!! But the gun functioned flawlessly! I used Mini Mags, then Golden Bullets, and finally a box of 555 bullets, all were plated, don't remember any malfunctions, so Dlask did a GREAT job on the barrel and install. Also used the Ruger 10/22 and my son's GSG STG44, all function great. Only thing to remember is to watch how you load GSG magazines, that bullet tip needs to be facing the front of the magazine tilted up.

Anyways, but to the modding journey of the GSG16.

That kind of sucks. I never really thought of it shifting from the heat. I was only worried about tearing the polymer, if you drop it or hit the sight/mount.

For the rear sight. I tried mine with the MP5K pistol sight and noticed that it shot very high. The new model I got ( ICS ) the drum will come off separate. So I'm going to turn it down the difference of the raised receiver. That should allow the rear sight to go lower, and make adjustments with the front.

I asked Peter, if he could make the rail delete with a built in rail. Since his method of mounting the delete is more solid than the stock.

Looking at Peter rail delete, There is 2 meaty sections that you could drill and probably counter sink some thread inserts in it.
