Hi everyone, I’ve got an NR Benelli M4 with the 18.5 in barrel. I’m on the lookout for the 14in barrel ( not the complete gun....just the barrel) assy if I can find one sold separately. Do they ever sell the 14in barrel alone ? Is the barrel considered the registered portion of the riffle, or the receiver like on most other firearms ?
If someone finds the barrel, do you need to have it transferred like a restricted firearm, or you just buy it, and then call to register the shotgun as a restricted when you fit the barrel to the receiver ?
Thanks for your help.

The receiver is the registered part if the whole gun fits the requirements.

If you find an Entry barrel and exchange it, you need to call in and register it as Restricted. No different than taking any other NR semi-auto and putting a short barrel on it that would make it Restricted.

As for sourcing, try contacting Stoeger Canada. They may be able to bring it just barrels.

Makes a guy wonder if adding a longer barrel will UN-restrict the gun. But I guess not eh.

For many restricted rifles and shotguns adding a longer barrel and having it verified will make that firearm nonrestricted

Yep, i did this with my USC45 carbine, got the 18.5" barrel and re-classified it as Non-restricted. It took about a month for the change to go through and a few more before it was "taken out of the system" although i don't know if it ever was un-registered.

For the OP:

This is more the type of thing a person does on a permanent basis, it's not like you can just plop the 18.5" barrel on and go out into the bush then put the 14" on and take it to the range...

You may be able to trade for a 14" barrel but I would generally consider this a permanent alteration.

There was a restricted version on the EE last week. Selling yours and buying that would be the cheapest way. If I recall, the barrel alone is $600 or so if you can find one

I'm on the lookout aswell, please pm me if you find a source

I ended up trading my 18.5 in barrel with a 14in one from another cgn Member. But like F22-Raptor said, you will have to do more digging from a registration point of view. My thinking was more like, I register the riffle as restricted and then I have to go to a range. But if I swap the barrel with a longer one, I can just take it anywhere I want to shoot it. I will ask the folks at the CFC office, but again, I’m not sure they will give me the right answer.....ironically, they’re not known to always give you a consistent answer. Anyway, the M4 with the 14in barrel looks bad ass, and feels quite lighter. Given the weight difference, I think it has to do with the balance. In my humble opinion, I think a shotgun with a pistol grip is meant to have a short tactical barrel. But again, the US marines have been using the long version for a while now. I think I will buy a Beretta 1301 tactical for my unrestricted needs. Oh I almost forgot to tell you, the 14in barrel does not have chokes. So if you need those, you won’t have them in the shorter version....but who needs chokes for A short barrel.

I'm just wondering if I can take my Turknelli 18.5" barrel and put it on my restricted M4 and have it verified then have it taken out of the system. Would that be possible??

As soon as you slapped that 14” barrel on you M4 you’ve made the gun restricted. By law, you now have 30 days to notify the CFC and register it. There is no provision to constantly switch back and forth between barrels. If you put the 18.5” barrel back on, and want to go back to non-res, you’d need to have the gun verified by a qualified verifier and they would submit the required report on your behalf.

I’ve converted quite a few restricted Benelli M4s to non-res. And for those wondering, as far as I know, the 14” barrel is only available on the 14” gun. Best solution, is buy the restricted, buy a spare 18.5” barrel and then have it converted to non-res.

If the barrel fits and functions on the Benelli, you could absolutely do that. Just need to have a verifier submit the paperwork. If the barrel is the exact same length as the factory Benelli 18.5” barrel, then no new FRT number would need to be created. The firearms centre does not track what brand your barrel is.

I have spoken to the importer about a Turknelli barrel on a Benelli receiver and they informed me thst although they look similar, there are differences that dont guarantee fit or safety in doing so.

The 1301 is only 2" longer than an M4 14' SBS(and lighter), despite have a 18.5" barrel. Quite an amazing piece of craftsmanship the 1301 is.
