Update On Ontario Restricted Transfer Times

I called the ombudsman office again and they told me that their "review" is still ongoing. They are very tight-lipped about what, if anything, they are doing. It's great to live in a system with "checks and balances" right?

Thank you for taking the time and calling.

The saga continues... Private to private AB->ON (again) May 8 - July 24. Called CFO to check if it was approved and was told it was processed a few days ago. They didn't send the email once again. Wtf? It's always requested, I guess doing these are so hard. Smfh

Oh and I asked what day they are working on and after she checked it is May 11.

Just spoke directly with the lady working on my case and she said that there's no issues they are just super backed up. She didn't even bother to ask me for my PAL or ref number. That's what I call efficiency, apparently they can read minds now. Unbelievable how badly she wanted to rush me off the phone.

Well, if you’ve been following the thread, you can expect about 15 more days.

Last time I checked the thread (the beginning of the week), I'm pretty sure they were saying the CFO was dealing with transfers from the first week of May. While I hope 15 days on what is already way too long is correct, I'm thinking it may more likely be in the mid to high 20s.

I found out a vendor actually initiated a transfer to me even though I had the item on layaway and hadn’t paid in full yet, so I’m happy about that

I think going forward if this is the “new norm” (cringe) for restricted transfer processing times, vendors are gonna have to be more flexible in terms of payment. They should be starting transfers on layaway restricteds and have the buyer settle up when everything is approved.

Highly unlikely you’ll find many, if any, dealers willing to entertain that idea. Unless you know and are on good terms with the LGS, it is just too large a risk. Once the transfer has been approved, they have to hand over the firearm whether you paid or not. It is legally now your property registered to you. The LGS has no legal grounds to hold the firearm.

They can take you to small claims court to try and recoup the money......but that’s it.

I think the ombudsman is a waste of time. I didn't even reply to their email. Everybody needs to start writing Doug Ford premier@ontario.ca and their own MPP if she/he is cpc. This delay is getting out of hand. I wrote and my MPP's staff wrote back saying they would bring it up. Had to correct them and let them know it is the OPP that the CFO works for.

I sent this to Ford's office, a little over a week ago. Nothing back, yet.

Good day, Premier Ford.
My issue is with the inordinate amount of time it takes the CFO, to process a simple procedure and Ontario's licensed fire arm owners are being made to wait, months longer than the other provinces - (with the possible exception of Quebec), to be able to take possession of something they have paid for, it is already registered to their name and are legally allowed to own.
The part I have a hard time understanding - and maybe my understanding is "out to lunch", but I believe that Mirimichi handles the transfer of ownership from the seller to the buyer, on the initial phone calls from each ? - and that process is completed within the first 24/48 hours. From there it goes to the CFO and we are simply waiting for permission/authorization for the previous owner to ship it to the new owner. Our names and info (licensed firearm owners) are on a continues loop through CPIC and if we're not "flagged", it should be a simple "rubber stamp" - and done. Seems to me that this process is being made a lot more involved than it needs to be. The western provinces can run through these in a couple of days - if Ontario has so many new transfers going on, that they are backlogged for two or three months - perhaps they should hire a few more clerks ?
I know that you are currently busier than a one armed paper-hanger, but if there is anything your office can do, to help Ontario's CFO, get closer to the efficiency of the other provinces, myself and thousands of others, would greatly appreciate it.
Regards - My name, Oshawa.

I'm not expecting this will produce any real action - maybe, if there were a couple thousand submissions, it might get their attention. I fear it is as my dad use to say - "You may as well rub butter on your ass - It won't help, but it can't hurt".

Thanks for writing. I may use some of these points when writing my own letters.

I think I will write the Premier, the Ombudsman, my MPP, etc.
