A somewhat long post for a simple problem:
I got a little problem with those small red squirrels making a home of our boat barn. The thing is we have two fishing boats in there(my father's and my uncle's) plus 300 lobster traps. And from what my father understands, squirrels will chew up the heads of the traps which would make life more difficult in the spring when we haul the traps to the wharf. So i'm just using a ~490fps pellet gun w/ iron sights to dispatch the offending squirrels, as i want to cause as little damage to the traps(i won't shoot towards the boats anyways)

The problem(besides my aiming) is catching the damn things out in the open is extremely hit and miss. If i miss my shot they got 300 traps to hide in that are stacked like 6 high and 3 deep.

So can someone help me improve my odds of catching them in the open? And what can I use to lure them out? FYI the longest shot i could take in there would be around 40ft, probably more like 20ft.

Also I'm 95% sure I shot one of them but when i went in the house to get a flash light and came back, he was nowheres to be found when i got back. I had to get a flashlight and also gloves cause he fell behind some stacked wood. So I'm wondering if the 490fps pellet gun isn't heavy hitting enough? My father has a .22 so maybe the cb longs would work better but how destructive would they be on the traps? Also i kinda doubt any retailers carry that kind of specialty ammo.

Live Traps are probably my best option but they cost a bit more then pellets, also less entertaining :50cal:

Oh yeah incase your wondering i'm using an old(heavy as hell it seems) Slavia 630

first you should fined out if you can hunt them in your province here in Ont you need to be a traper and have a trapers lic to take them

other than killing the little buggers there is no way to get rid of them. id go with the Traps. then you have a bit of plausable deniability "sorry i didnt know it was squerrels getting in here. i thought it was rats"

if your out there plinking them with a pellet rifle its hard to say you didnt know what you were shooting at :)

You can shoot whatever the hell you like on your own property if it's causing damage. It's not "hunting", it's pest control.

Now, as far as how to get rid of them? Go to the hardware store and buy some rat traps (like the other guys said). Smear some PB on it and set them in the corners.

When animals become pests you are usually allowed to get rid of them.

Please note I DID NOT WRITE THIS, I am just passing on what is published;);););););)

By all means check with your local MNR first. Pests or not. Red squirrels are protected here in Ontario, but they may not be in PEI. CYA yourself. I suspect that your livelihood will take precedence over a tree rat. You may find the PEI MNR or Humane Society will have loaner live traps too.
Either way, you'll have to seal up the building afterwards. A tree rat can get through the smallest hole you can imagine.
Any kind of .22 will cause damage to the building and anything else it hits. You could try a different type of pellet though.

:bangHead:I have a similar problem with squirrels. They are tearing the insulation out of my garge and sreading it all over the yard. Ive tried rat traps and peanut butter...they dont work. the squirrels just set them off, drag them into the middle of the yard and eat the peanut butter off them. I watched one do this one day. Next i tried gopher traps...the little biggers did the same thing. then i tried glue boards. The only evidence i could find of their usefullness was a little tuff of fur on the corner of the board. Im in ths city so im kinda screwed...otherwize i would just load up some birdshot and get rid of the little buggers. :bangHead:

We have problems with squirrels from time to time. Poison from a professional exterminator worked best. I shot one at point blank range with a 495 fps air pistol and I don't think I killed it, at least not immediately. Properly placed so that no domestic animal gets at it, poison is best as it works 24 hours a day. Squirrels can cause massive property damage in one evening.

Red squirrels have no protection on PEI and can be killed year round.

When I trapped I always trapped quite few squirrels while going from fox set to fox set. Regular old rat traps and apple chunks were all I used.
