Hey guys I’m trying to figure out the process for private sales of restricted weapons.

Once I start the transfer is there a way for me to cancel it if the buyer tries to back out or doesn’t pay?

Buddy wants to buy a collection off of me (with no trader rating for $4000 worth of pistols) and wants me to start the transfer before payment and I’m a little Leary of this plan.

Any help would be appreciated

I cant agree more with @simpleman.......Cash or EMT. No cash no guns. Once you supply the transfer reference number to them and it goes through prior to full payment you are screwed. Save yourself all the stress......I know the EMT limit is 3000.00 in a 24 hour period so your buyer will have to send you 2 transfers prior to you initiating anything.

I wouldn't even deal with that member if that was their "plan".
Run away.
Money first for sure. That’s how it’s done. He may have other concerns to not pay before transfer too. Like not getting approved, or concerns of being ripped off as much as you worrying about the deal turning into a nightmare. Maybe get on the phone with him and have a chat. As far as no trader rating, we all started somewhere. Some diligence is required, but I’m sure you can work it out.

I never heard of a transfer being reversed. When the gun is transferred, it belong to the new guy and only him can initiate a transfer back to who he want, and there is nothing you can do about it, short of taking him to court.

Only when the transfer are not approved by the CFO, then no transfer take place.

Avoid trouble - like almost everybody wrote - get the money first or no deal. When you are fully - FULLY paid, initiate transfer.

Years ago , I had a cheque bounce, only 2 in 40 yrs, any way he started hemming and hawing , So I phone up and had the transfer canceled, no problem, as I still had the pistol, I never ship until I make sure the cheque cleared, unless it is some one I know and deal with.
But , do not start a transfer until you have cash in hand, or your bank, these days , with some of the crap going on , I could see a privet transfer reversal being a PITA, as you don't own it anymore. The CFO don't care about your money.

I recall having dealt with an idiot who, after the sale, argued for a rebate. Offered a full refund, no, he didn't want a refund - because he wanted to keep the rifle - but he continued to waste my time, arguing for a rebate.

A guy like that would probably like to pay after the fact, like he would do at a restaurant (if he wasn't too cheap to eat in a place where a gratuity would be expected). Can you imagine what a guy like that might do if you'd put your guns in his name before he'd paid for them?

Money first, transfer second, always.

You can cancel a transfer before it is approved and when selling to Ontario or Quebec that takes weeks. Traditionally, around here we prefer money first transfer second. I think the key here in your situation is finding a common ground rather that having a hard stance on things.

What I would not do is initiate a transfer for multiple pistols without a payment. Do one pistol at a time, starting with the cheapest one. Good luck and keep us posted!
