Over the years, on different hunts I get in the field only to realize I forgot something mega important at home. Worst time was my partners and I got 7 hours up river, shot 2 big 1000lb+ bull moose, then realized nobody took the hunting knife bag. (Saws, knives, scalpels, etc)
Darkness was about 1 hr away so going back would have been 5hrs downriver, 1hr drive to camp, plus 7 hours back up river. We ended up butchering both moose with a leatherman and a souvenir 1.5" blade pocketknife I found in my pack.
Since then, I have used lists EVERYTIME I HUNT to be sure I dont forget something important.
Do you guys use lists or just wing it. If you do, wanna share your list so new hunters have a template to use?

I make lists.... been a compulsive disorder since my youth LOL
I am pretty much never the guy that leaves stuff at home or at base camp but I have had a few hunts go sideways due to partners not showing up with very obvious items
november moose draw in region 6 a few years ago. Buddy had the tag, I knew the area. He drove 5 hrs to my place then we did a 10 hour drive to camp. Next morning, wet snow, +1C heading into colder temps overnight. Buddy forgot his extra boots for crappy weather as well as forgetting rain gear and pants .... but that wasn't the worse part.... he left the bolt for his rifle at home too.

I have most of my gear packed into two bags, so as long as those bags come with me to camp I'm pretty much set. I should probably make up a master list on Excel though, as I have totally forgotten #### before - Headed for Harrison in the Fall with just my runners last year, and Harrison can be a very wet place... Had to detour and pick up a cheap pair of rubber boots that I now leave in the truck just in case!

I also keep a small dry bag in my pack with all the essentials - knives/saw, game bags, fire starters, first aid kit, etc so as long as I have that I'm pretty much set for when an animal goes down.

I make lists for any kind of trip, be it shopping, work or hunting. Hunting I generally have a pack that’s got all my necessities in all year, it’s ready to go at a moment’s notice for anything locally. If I’m heading away from home I make a list of the extra stuff I’ll need to bring.

I have a list on my computer that I print out and check off as I am packing for every hunting trip.
Before I had that I forgot things a few times and forgetting something can really cause problems. One thing that comes to mind is a friend forgot his trigger lock key. A few hours at camp were spent getting the lock off.

Combo trigger locks ftw!

For me I seem to always end up with a post-it note (or notes) of stuff to remember - hell, right now I'm writing on a post-it to remember my chrono tomorrow! lol

Happens to somebody at our hunt camp every year lmao. I keep a lock pick set now. About 30 seconds and the lock is off and not damaged.

I keep my important stuff on my vest. And make a mental list I go over about 30 times while packing and after I leave "oh crap I forgot my gloves" haha

I should start a paper list.

Not just for hunting but I make a list for most things I do. My mind isn't what it was 40 years ago. I have one on the computer for winter camping. I make one up before I head out to a shooting competition. I have one made up for tools to take to the range tomorrow for a work day. And a note at the bottom to pick up my helper on the way there.
A list is something you younger (under 50) folks should consider getting in the habit of doing now. It helps keep you from eventually being 'that old guy' who forgot stuff.:)

Funny enough I am working one up right now. I don't make a hard list but typically all the "stuff" is packed together so it's really just a question of how much food to add.

I don’t make lists exactly. When I started out I didn’t have much except a gun, ammo, knife, license and colours so thats what I took.

Now I’ve hot more stuff than I could ever use, but still do mental check to see If I have my gun, ammo, knife, license and colours. If I have that, I’ll get by. If I dont the rest doesn’t matter much.

For deer I have a fanny pack that is packed and hangs under the stairs for years now. That has all I need for a day. When I belonged to a hunt camp, I had 2 Rubbermaid’s that stayed packed all year for trips to the camp. Any longer duration trip I’ve made or more remote stuff gets a list. You have to do it!

Don't generally make a list. Have a pack in the car all year round. As long as I have my vehicle. Gloves, toque, rangefinder, binos, knives and TP.
