Honestly, they should abolish the "made in Canada" necessity and adopt either the SIG P320, Glock G19 or SIG P229.
SIG P320 would serve us best due to our relations with the USA.
SIG would more than likely give Canada a pretty sweet deal if we adopt the M18.
Not bashing the Browning Hi Power by any means but, the time has long come and gone to retire them and flood the Canadian market with surplus.
We should deck our boys out with .45 Colt sa revolvers. When was the last time a Canadian soldier discharged a sidearm that was not an assassination?
Someone should just demolish the procurement wing of the puzzle palace in Ottawa and rebuild it from the ground up.
I wish we had the political brainpower to make Defence procurement a nonpartisan issue like in Australia. Major projects don't get axed by the new government to spite the old one. Their system isn't perfect either, but they seem to actually make headway on major and minor projects despite having a noticeably smaller defence budget. They buy smaller quantities of stuff than we do, but they still seem to get it done in a reasonable time frame. They have a little bit of the 'build-it-at-home'-itis that we do, but they don't make unreasonable stipulations (like making pistols under license at Colt Canada because Canada).
Not sure where the 20,000 comes from the OP quotes 9,000. If they get the 320 for $400 per you are looking at $360,000 plus parts and holsters. Knowing the Liberals this will get cancelled to trim the $400,000,000,000 deficit the idiot wants to run this year.
At the rate Trudeau is going our dollar is going to sunk faster than Pesos after a lunch at a Mexican food stand,

Edited mine still unsure if your number or my number is correct
9000 units times 400 dollars each is 3.6 million
Japan is not a member of NATO otherwise Trudeau would.
Seriously guys a Glock! SIG M17. Get the same pricing as the US Army did without paying for all the R&D. Just announce the contract after Nov 3. You might even get a buyback on the 226/225's we have now. Opps the RCMP need a new pistol. Give them the 225/226's. Everybody wins including the taxpayer/

Is that a serious question? You think the Canadian forces went through 10 years in Afghanistan with no one firing a shot in anger?
You raise an intersting thought though. Some people in the CAF desire a side arm as a symbol of authority, ie generals, senior commanders, etc. These people would do well with a nice flashy single action revolver, maybe with Canadian made seal tusk handles.
Some people in CAF need a sidearm as a back up gun when fighting the fight, or because their job is genuinely hampered with a long gun. These people need a modern combat pistol and there are several good enough options.
Lastly, some people want a pistol simply as a convenience, or as an excuse to not have to carry their long gun, like clerks, and other HQ support staff. These people would be well served with a Blue Gun.

I was partially being facetious, partially commenting on the image of a sidearm being more the weapon of war than the sidearm itself, especially in Afghanistan, thanks to the previous Russian occupation.

Why would we go to the Japanese to have reproductions of an obsolete and long out of production Russian service handgun designed by a Belgian, manufactured for us?
