Project to buy new pistols for Canadian Forces is once again underway

Honestly, they should abolish the "made in Canada" necessity and adopt either the SIG P320, Glock G19 or SIG P229.
SIG P320 would serve us best due to our relations with the USA.
SIG would more than likely give Canada a pretty sweet deal if we adopt the M18.
Not bashing the Browning Hi Power by any means but, the time has long come and gone to retire them and flood the Canadian market with surplus.

Service pistols are designated a controlled good. There is round about zero chance the military will dispose of them to the public in a usable condition. Unless of course the Canadian ramges say they want them.

We should deck our boys out with .45 Colt sa revolvers. When was the last time a Canadian soldier discharged a sidearm that was not an assassination?

$27000 dollars for an AR15 what a laugh . and critics say it's at least twice what other militaries have been paying ? kick back money . people who do stupid things like spend our money like they do need to be replaced . as for handguns they could buy and I don't like them they could buy Berettas or even better they could contact the Czechs and order some CZ 85 pistols . but why don't they just order some Glock 17 pistols and be done with it . reliable accurate and they work for many other armies . too much stupidly and wasting money nowadays and no one is held accountable . 96 million dollars for 1.148 machine guns . unreal .

Is that a serious question? You think the Canadian forces went through 10 years in Afghanistan with no one firing a shot in anger?

You raise an intersting thought though. Some people in the CAF desire a side arm as a symbol of authority, ie generals, senior commanders, etc. These people would do well with a nice flashy single action revolver, maybe with Canadian made seal tusk handles.

Some people in CAF need a sidearm as a back up gun when fighting the fight, or because their job is genuinely hampered with a long gun. These people need a modern combat pistol and there are several good enough options.

Lastly, some people want a pistol simply as a convenience, or as an excuse to not have to carry their long gun, like clerks, and other HQ support staff. These people would be well served with a Blue Gun.

Someone should just demolish the procurement wing of the puzzle palace in Ottawa and rebuild it from the ground up.

I wish we had the political brainpower to make Defence procurement a nonpartisan issue like in Australia. Major projects don't get axed by the new government to spite the old one. Their system isn't perfect either, but they seem to actually make headway on major and minor projects despite having a noticeably smaller defence budget. They buy smaller quantities of stuff than we do, but they still seem to get it done in a reasonable time frame. They have a little bit of the 'build-it-at-home'-itis that we do, but they don't make unreasonable stipulations (like making pistols under license at Colt Canada because Canada).

God damn right. The system is broken.

3.6 million for the math correct?

So my number of 3.6 million is correct and not your 360 thousand

Please say which is correct as I think it is 3.6 million plus parts

Not sure where the 20,000 comes from the OP quotes 9,000. If they get the 320 for $400 per you are looking at $360,000 plus parts and holsters. Knowing the Liberals this will get cancelled to trim the $400,000,000,000 deficit the idiot wants to run this year.

At the rate Trudeau is going our dollar is going to sunk faster than Pesos after a lunch at a Mexican food stand,

Seriously guys a Glock! SIG M17. Get the same pricing as the US Army did without paying for all the R&D. Just announce the contract after Nov 3. You might even get a buyback on the 226/225's we have now. Opps the RCMP need a new pistol. Give them the 225/226's. Everybody wins including the taxpayer/

Yeah... that's not how the Canadian Govt works...

I was partially being facetious, partially commenting on the image of a sidearm being more the weapon of war than the sidearm itself, especially in Afghanistan, thanks to the previous Russian occupation.

Pistol are still valuable tools. You know how hard it is to shove a carbine thru a pistol port on a armored vech? Or quickly run out, to diagnose a engine issue?

I figured you were. But facetious or not it raised the point that different people in CAF need pistols for different reasons.

Yes in Afghan, usually drawing a pistol from a holster had a bigger effect on behaviour than pointing an LMG at someone. That doesnt detract from the fact some people actually used their pistol for what it was good for, and the failure rate was unacceptably high, and many people couldn't trust the equipment, which could be more dangerous than not having it at all.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 new handguns are to be ordered for Canadian military

The Canadian military’s purchase of 9,000 new pistols will be an initial order but the project could see as many as 20,000 new firearms purchased. The acquisition of 9,000 pistols is just the first purchase to support Canadian Army requirements, said Department of National Defence spokeswoman Jessica Lamirande. “The precise number has not yet been confirmed as it will depend on requirements, but the grand total is expected to be in the range of 15,000 to 20,000,” she added. Under the latest plan bids are expected to be requested in early 2021. The DND hopes to have a contract in place by the summer of 2021, with initial deliveries by the summer of 2022.

Why would we go to the Japanese to have reproductions of an obsolete and long out of production Russian service handgun designed by a Belgian, manufactured for us?

I have no idea I think the fellow who mentioned Nagent pistols was been sarcastic. My reply simply added to his facetious remark.

Now we just need to get new ATGMs, SAMs, fighters, drones, maritime patrol aircraft, utility vehicles, utility helicopters, the Type 26 frigates, submarines....

Imagine if we lived in a country where we actually gave a #### about our defense and planned / spent accordingly to keep our equipment up to date. Instead, we let everything rot, trying to replace it at the last minute and insist on it being built domestically for twice the cost.

Hahahahaha BLUE Gun..... I am cleaning up the coffee blown out of my nose right now.... CameronSS you crack me up.... I just made a fzcking mess of my Logitech Keyboard on my IPad from this Blue Gun remark.

That’s gotta be the best suggestion for them WOGs (without guns)...

I’m going to be dead before the CAF ever replace the BHP. I’m so freaking old, I even carried one overseas in 1978! Ha ha ha ha

Stay strong and stay safe my CGN friends!!

Cheers, Barney
