decoys left out unattended

Ducks on a lake near an abandoned blind seems like fair game to me. Do they sink when shot?

And no BS 'bout shooting sitting ducks. I like my game lead free. OK, steel free!

As far as im aware youre entitled to your blind/stand the first day of opening season on public land, after that its fair game.

Also, no one owns the water

on public land you DO NOT have any right to any blind BUT the unwritten rule is as you say the blind you built is yours for opener only this is why we are in our blind extra early to ensure we get it its also well hidden and very hard to find in the dark we use gps to find it

NO your 100% wrong we have a blind we built and have used for 15 years PUBLIC lake we DO NOT own it we get there early to make sure we get it, a few times we have been beaten and we have alternative blinds we use

the issue if you read the original post is that these guys are leaving their decoys set up when they are not there so far its been since Friday night they have NOT been back the decoys are drawing birds away and causing them to flare and go away the spread is set up poorly

Yep.

This is the big difference between deer and duck hunting, at least around here.

Guys generally respect another's deer spot on public land, because they know messing around there can hurt someone else's hunt.

But duck spots, I can hunt there Friday and someone else can still have a good shoot Saturday. It's good sportsmanship to clean up your decoys after you're done, so someone else can hunt a spot. If you don't own it, you shouldn't leave your decoys there, because it adversely affects other hunters with no benefit to you. If anything, it's also bad for your hunt, as it educates the birds. Especially if your decoy spread is bad to start with, because you're lining up goldeneyes weeks before they show up in the area, and setting geese like goldeneyes in long lines.

Like I said--had a problem with a local guy doing this, and claiming "Oh I hunt here almost every day." Uh huh. Then how come I live just around the corner and never hear you shooting "almost every day"? I hunted that spot, and other guys, consistently for years, never claiming it as our own--and as soon as this guy did, and started leaving his decoys there for weeks on end, the hunting dried up.

In my neck of the woods, not many people take the time to build permanent blinds, anymore, for many different reasons, mostly from what I'm told are time constraints. I convert my fishing boat to a portable duck blind with PVC pipe, burlap and camo netting every fall. That way,I can go where I please whenever I can get the time to go.

so you think its ok to just leave your decoy spreads out for days unattended on a public lake at 3 different locations screwing over others in the area and "claiming" entire sections of the lake as theirs?

Either way the decoys aren't yours.. Pretty easy to comprehend for some..

Why not just hunt the spot that has the decoys left out if that’s where the birds are landing? If the other hunters show up all the better then you can tell them you are hunting public land and it’s first come first serve. I wouldn’t take someone else’s stuff. Not only
is it stealing, sounds like you don’t know these guys and you may be starting something that could escalate.

The decoys are where the birds usually roost they fly over see how wrong it is and move away

we don't know who they are

they would have no idea who took or moved their decoys if we did touch them

I wouldn't hunt from some else blind unless it was clearly abandoned

we had no paper or pens so i took some Kleenex I had and attached it to their signs this way they will know someone was there

I marked their blinds on my gps If I have time ill call the MNR tomorrow and see what they have to say if they want to check it out ill give them the coordinates

interfering with a lawful hunt is also illegal same as leaving items on public lands. Then there is the dozens of empty hulls broken chairs and other garbage they have left and I'm betting them wont clean up (but I wont know until the spring)

And maybe they're "new Canadians" and don't fully understand Canadian hunters etiquette.

There's no shortage of thieves among native-born Canadians (a 'native-born Canadian' means a person who was born in Canada); I've seen my share of them.

In my experience, thieves don't care about etiquette (or morality), just consequences.

If it makes you feel better. I bought a piece of land that abutts crown. My neighbour used to hunt on the private land and the crown. Once i bought he came up to me and said just so you know were claiming the crown.

Lol okay buddy. Cya out there.
