My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Congratulations to Gobc and sigp226 on their recently posted targets.

Last month I sold a few rifles and I had an Anschutz BR50 stock left over so I bought a new 1913 barreled action for it. Unfortunately, while I still have a number of bricks of different lots of Lapua remaining, none of them is particularly good shooting. I've been waiting patiently for a new shipment of Lapua to arrive at my usual dealer so I could post a respectable target, but it's still a week or more away.

Yesterday's forecast for today called for windy conditions today, but this morning when it was light enough to see two nearby lakes I saw that their smooth-as-glass surfaces meant it was very calm. I had to go to the range. I took two different lots of Midas +, one of which had produced some very small groups but also, frustratingly, some inconsistent ones. I thought I could at least see how many good groups I could get out of it. (The answer was nine out of forty.)

I also had one box of Lapua X-Act that I received in January along with a box of Polar Biathlon and Eley Tenex, as a generous and unexpected Christmas gift from my ammo dealer. It's the only box of X-Act I've ever had. I took it with me this morning, not knowing what to expect. While the first five groups were singularly unimpressive, the second, to my surprise, was much better. In fact it has the smallest five group average I've ever shot.

The rifle with a Sightron SIII 10-50 LRTD.

The target shot at 57 yards.

The groups, from left to right: .186, .254, .269, .183, .143".

The five group average is .207".

The ammo was Lapua X-Act, the only box I had.

The distance shot was 57 yards.

Well done this is great target. Never try the lapua X-Act will have to give a chance once in a while. really nice looking 1913 rifle @grauhanen.

Regards,
Jeff

Very, very nice! Averages like that are hard to come by, so darn close to 1/4" too! So, have you called the dealer yet to see if they have any of that X-Act left? :d

Well done grauhanen, be interesting to see what you can do with a tuner on it.

Thank you, gentlemen.

I have a Starik tuner I plan to try on this rifle as well as a Harrell tuner that I'll get bored to fit this rifle. Perhaps if the upcoming Lapua shipment has a good lot I'll be able to get five groups under .25", something for which having a tuner can help.

Rabid, I haven't yet called the dealer about that lot of X-Act. It may have a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde character. The target above was the result of the second 25 rounds from that single box of X-Act. The first 25 rounds produced a target that I could see from the bench had some much bigger groups, one of which would have been disqualifying. As a result I wasn't expecting the results I got on this target. Since the conditions under which both targets were shot were the same, I can think of only two explanations why the first target wasn't very good, while the second was much better. But neither of those explanations is entirely satisfying.

One is that since I had patched the bore prior to shooting the X-Act and fouled with five rounds of SK+ (which should have very similar if not the same bullet lube) the bore was not fouled with sufficient consistency. But I haven't always seen a previous pattern in this with other ammo and targets. The second is that the first 25 rounds were randomly less consistent than the second 25 rounds. The odds seem a little long on this, so I'll go with the first explanation in the absence of another good one. Another box or two of this ammo might offer the explanation.

Of course there's a third explanation, what I'll call the Gilligan's Island explanation -- but it's very unsatisfying. When the Skipper asked why the radio wasn't working, Gilligan explained that "Maybe it's one of those things." The Skipper demanded to know "What do you mean it's one of those things." Gilligan offered weakly that "Maybe it's one of those broken radio things." Maybe it's one of those rimfire things. :yingyang:

I often feel this way. It can be maddening to try and pinpoint just what is going on sometimes.

So today I enjoyed just a half day at work, which left a half day at the range. I consider this a "new/different" rifle. Lilja replaced the first barrel I got from them, since I could never get it shooting well. Got lucky and did 1/2" once with it, but never again. That's just not the way a match barrel should shoot. I finally got that replacement earlier this year, and just recently started to focus on testing it out. It is now a 3-groove barrel with Lilja 2 chamber, a little tighter than a Bentz and just slightly engraves the bullet. I think I'll keep this one :d

Rifle: CZ 455 Canadian with Lilja Varmint barrel
Scope: Sightron SII 6-24X Mil-dot
Rest: Caldwell Rock, Narrow front bag. Caldwell rear bag
Ammo: Lapua Midas +
Groups: 0.176", 0.359", 0.392", 0.236", 0.251"
Average: 0.283"
Harrell's tuner, setting 300

Nicely done, Rabid. Your target has some good results for a rifle with a sporter stock.

With regard to my recent post, I have to point to a subtraction mistake on my target above in post #1881 above. I should have caught it before posting.

Nice shooting Glen.
I've been thinking about this same actual gun for local BR matches for production class.

Referencing back to RABID's entry at #1888, and the Harrell tuner set at 300.
What happens when fine tuning.
While setting my tuner, started at 0, then two revolutions to 50, 100, 150 and 200.
They were all good but the lower settings proved to be the sweeter spot.
Currently set at 17 and I have left it there from that setting search and use that setting for 50 yards, 100 yards and metres.
Two targets shot at 100 yards scored 600 - 42X and the average of the six 10-shot groups measured 0.77".
Hardly worth fiddling with it . . .
A friend (RIP) tested a number of lots without a tuner, ordered a case of the best, put the tuner back on set at "0" and won most of our matches.

Yes it’s .249” not .269”. Ur gettin a B- on ur report card mister Haha. Extremely great shooting! If you let me know the lot number I have some Lapua Exact and I’m guessing it’s the same. I think I have eight boxes if they’re of use to further your testing with the nice new rifle. Cheers Chris

Finally success (I believe) after two slightly failed attempts!
