The story is kind of funny.
I spent first light hiking 3 miles into a foot access only grazing lease. The herd I was after was in a spot I didn't expect and busted me. I tried to close the distance by belly crawling in what small depressions in the prairie there were, but every time I got to the next rise they were further and further away. I eventually gave up as I didn't want to push them right out of the lease and I figured they would eventually come back and I could hunt them that night or the next morning. In total I hiked 8 miles in the morning.
In the afternoon I was on a grazing lease at the end of a cattle trail (as far as you could go in a truck, foot access only past that point) just glassing around, eating my soup ect.
A herd of about 40 came out of the river valley and started walking towards my truck. It wasn't running and since I was just sitting there they were not bothered by it. They walked from about 400 meters away to a point 92 meters (closest point) in front of my truck getting to another field. I saw the biggest buck was at the back, herding his harem. I slipped out of my truck and onto a small rise and waited until the buck got to the point 92 meters away and dropped him. Bang flop.
Funny how one spends so much time and effort hiking into a foot access only area, only to later get a buck while eating his lunch in the truck!
