Rifle Scope Mounts - Preferences?

I have also used the least expensive Leupold Rifleman rings on hunting rigs. There may be a certain level of scope ring snobbery out there? :p

You're right. The Leupold Rifleman and similar Weavers have never once let me down on rifles all the way up to 375magnum over the last 35yrs but the snobbery you mention makes people think that a more expensive system will work better.

I think that half the people that spend a pile of money on the real Gucci setups rarely take them anywhere that would require that level of durability.

weaver steel base and leupold qrw rings.

the only ones that stand my use with sled and boats mostly.

Since your rifles actually see some challenging use, have you noticed any setups that are real "no gos" or likely to break?

yes the talley lightweight ones, the warne ruger quick detach, alloy or alumunium weaver base with steel rings. are a no no for me.

ruger rings and weaver steel base with qrw leupold is working for me when i need quick detach because of open sights or having a spare scope.

Thank you, its enlightening to hear what fails

There are some pretty prolific examples of weavers in hard use out there. Phil shoemakers “ol ugly”, Finn Agaards second 375, and just about all of Ted’s guns come to mind. They’re cheap and tough! And ugly as heck!

I have had such great luck with Leupolds that they hold my #1 & 2 spots as hunting favourites; first the 2.5x8 is my absolute favourite with a good magnification range and optics. #2 would be a 1-4X of some form and if I could pick up a Patrol model with non adjustable turrets that would be even better than an old standby 1-4X model I have. They are fairly light, bright, and the light gathering ability at the low end in the woods is awesome. A number of rifles also have older, fixed power Leupolds at 3X, 4X, and 6X plus an old 10X target scope. They just never seem to fail. But just to show that I'm only a partial Leupold groupie, I really like a Burris 3-9 I bought secondhand, NIB a few years ago and many of my older rifles use plain old Weaver bases and rings. I like reliable and dependable in life, whether it be scopes, rifles, or people.

I use Talley (not really "Gucci"?) QD steel rings and steel bases on most rifles. They are relatively light and yet have precise dimensions that simplify scope installation. Once installed they also simplify swapping out of scopes. And although full Canadian retail for a set of Talley rings and bases can easily be north of $200., the last set of 30mm Talley QD all-steel rings that I bought were $25. at a local gunshow last year.

On a hunting rifle I prefer Leupold Dual Dovetail rings and two piece bases ... and a 3.5-10x40mm Leupold. Very solid and very reliable and compact.

I have that setup on a couple of rifles . Very solid even with the harsh recoil of the 300 WSM in a light weight A-Bolt.

Still ah bunch of them Weaver two screws'round'ear.
Nutt'in like an M8 been hugged by them cinched to Weaver basis.
Old school charm.

As long as the screws are torqued down evenly those old rings will hold anything down. I used to coat the bottom half with contact cement and let it dry before mounting the scope and never had one slip.

I already have the weavers now I just need to find a straight tube M8 3x for my 358 Norma, to give it that old school charm.

Call it Gucci if you like, but a 3lb scope on a .338 Lapua Magnum is going to need something substantial to hold up for even extended range sessions. A $400 mount is a drop in the bucket on a $8000 rifle set up.
