Zastava M70 Comercial Mauser 98 action 6.5 x 55

These are just amazing rifles so well-built so many features including an adjustable trigger and all metal hardware. I've had many 6.5x55s including the CZ and a Zastava I just sold to another CGNer. I have now made the switch to a 6.5 CM but still love the accuracy of the Swede and reliability of the Zastava.

That CZ full stock is nice!!

Zastava makes the rifle in in a full stock version as well, but none were available. Little shorter barrel at 20"; mine has a 22". I love a double set trigger; I have one an a sporterized 7 x 57 Brazilian Mauser.

The nice thing about Zastava M70 98’s is that you can leave it stock and have a budget rifle that’s still way better than a Savage Axis, or put a few hours into it and have a Sako that you only put time in. They can be as nice as you want them to be. It’s the rifle for everyone.
But just make sure the sights are straight and same for the drilled holes.

The drilled holes will never be straight, at least among the half dozen or so that have passed through here. Sometimes a Leupold has enough adjustment to be able to work, if you don't have windage adjustable rings/bases. Sometimes not. Bushnell Elites offer more clicks. The irons often have enough adjustment to be zeroed though. Switching stocks between two or bedding might help if not.

Used to have one of the Mannlicher style rifles in 6.5x55, but only a single trigger. It was an accurate, quality piece that one. Went with S&K rings/bases and looked like a million bucks. Don't recall the reason for selling that one but it must have been a pretty dumb reason.

Hmmmm I like that lots! In 6.5x55 or 7x57 a full stock Zastava double set trigger.... that could be a nice sheep/caribou gun and even better if they sell for less than a $1000!!!

I bought one a couple months ago. It would not give me a decent group at all. Looked like buckshot on the target. After putting around 300rds through it and screwing around with my reloading practices, different bullet weights, powder charges, cases & primers failed to improve the grouping, I took the stock off, found a high spot against the barrel, sanded it off and group tightened up a wee bit. Then I smoked the receiver found more high spots, ground them off and lo and behold accuracy! Then I proceeded to the hunting camp, took 2 deer on first & second day and was happy.

Well, I'm still waiting on my collet dies so I can get to the range and try it out. Canada post had the dies sitting in BC for over a week. Should finally be arriving tomorrow I think.

I got the rifle out yesterday to clean all of the oil and grease out of the bore and chamber in anticipation, and was looking at the bolt as it was a bit sticky from the day I got it. I finally figured out the issue. the cut in the stock that merges with the back of the receiver was not quite deep enough, and it was causing the bolt to bind, A few strokes with a file to the wood, and now, if I put the muzzle on the floor, open the bolt and let it go, it slides back on it's own weight. It is now as smooth as my old obendorf 7mm, and I have not fired a shot from the rifle. LOL.

I've a humpbacked version in 22-250. Good thing I'm used to milsurps...it's surprisingly hefty to wear when out for a stroll.
Nice rifle and it shoots well...but the bbl was floated and I see it's shifted again. Maybe they don't dry it in the proper method or something?

One of my first rifles I got was a full stock 308 zastava m70 from tradex. It's been great. Bolt was a little bit rough but has smoothed out quite a bit over the years. I am in no way a veteran hunter, but this rifle gets plenty of love everytime I bring it out. I recommend them whenever I can.

Update...

Well, I finally got to the range last Saturday with the rifle. Tried a variety of loads from min to max data using 120 gr. Privi bullets. Too soon to tell, but so far it looks like it likes loads heading towards max. It was quite windy, and I was shooting off of a bi-pod, but still managed a few 5 shot groups under an inch, and the best 3 shot was about 3/4" outside to outside; about 1/2" center to center.

I am very happy, but I realize I need a different scope.

BTW, the Weaver mounts I bought for it fit right on, and are indeed straight.

She needs a good cleaning and a second trip to the range on a calm day before I start fine tuning for the perfect load.

No regrets!!
