A good day. A spike at 2:45, got it field-dressed and saw that it was only 3:30, so out I went again, then an 8-pointer at 4:30. The spike was at 75 yds, and in tall grass, and not wanting to shoot through grass I tried my first neck shot. He went down and stayed put. Weighed 150 lbs before field dressing. The 8 pointer presented a great side shot at 135 yds through the boiler room, and he fell on the spot - he went 250 lbs. A sporter P14 (in 303 Brit of course) with 150gr Hornadys over 45.0 grs of Varget did the trick.

I have one more tag and more than a week of hunting left, and boy are they starting to move. I almost hit two deer on the way out, and the truck ahead of me had a doe hit it (bounced off the side). I'm holding out for a bruiser until the last day, when anything made of meat gets it.

Andy,

I though you might be using the 8X63. You you saving it for a moose hunt? :)

Ted

I'd like to use the 8x63, but I have a problem (I also don't use a 243, 308, 30/06, 300 Win Mag and a 35 Whelen). The P14 is just so darn accurate and I have so much confidence in it. Tough to put it away and use something else.

Nice rifle, but what is the attachment on the end of the bbl?

We've had similar luck here in Bancroft - two nice bucks in the first two days. Although we use hounds, neither deer was pushed... Seems like a good year, and the weather has cooperated!

Believe it or not, it's a muzzle brake. I bought it that way, and have considered removing it to shorten the barrel length, but probably never will.

It looks like one of the old Herter's brakes. Does it have a rear-facing slot milled in the top?

Nice rifle, as well a two nice deer.

Ted

We cracked 3 in about 4 munutes in a large alfalfa field Sat. night, 2 bucks and a doe. While we were cleaning them 30 or 40 more came out and started feeding around us in the twilight. One doe even came right up to the carcass of a buck and started sniffing it while we were gutting another one only 15 yards away. We took 6 in 3 days. Getting your meat deer in AB is about as difficult as heading to Sobeys (less difficult in fact -- no line ups or worries bout parking.)

Wow, great hunt!! Looks like your freezer will be full for a while! :D

3 tags? all to yourself? I wish they'd do that around the GTA. We have more deer than we know what to do with. I head out Friday (could only get a week off from work) for the second half of the season. I'm hoping to hit a double with my hunting partner and get some meat in my freezer too.

Great job on two nice, clean, kills.:D

I hope that wasn't on Nyland's place! LOL;) Heading there tonight to get my doe.

Congrats Andy on two fine deer Andy. I must confess I was hoping the 8x63 came out too. Next time huh?

The Vetterli almost got a doe last saturday with my four year old daughter in tow. Although it didn't work in our favor I hope this weekend will.;)

Enjoy the venison.

I have always intended to take a deer with something chambered in 8x63, and went so far this year as to scope and zero a mauser thusly chambered. I have also intended to shoot a deer with various milsurps (e.g. Swiss Vetterli Swedish Rolling Block. etc.). The problem is that the P14 shots so darn well, and if I missed the deer of a lifetime due to iron sights, or other reasons, I'd be pretty hard on myself. This would actually be a good time to use a milsurp now that the year is already a success. Next year for sure.

I am in the same boat. Call me crazy but I've been packing a back up gun with me when the Vetterli goes out. Rumors fly of big bucks at the farm which I have yet to see. If a 140 class steps up to bat within 100yds he is in for one heck of a suprise. Beyond that the 9,3 has yet to earn her keep and will be a shoe in.
This is hardly a set up that is nice for a full day hunt but when you just walk out to sit in a blind on the farm it makes for good fun.
It is hard not taking my 7mm everytime as it has been the "go to" for the longest yet.

Best of luck for your last week Andy!;)

#3 - a little Four Point. Shot at 4:45 this evening about 5 yds from where the Spike went down. I'm done - a good year. :)
