Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

Would be cool , but that possibility ship has sailed, somewhere in the 90's when #1 where at their heyday it might have been possible.

Now they are not in regular production not much of a chance, there is considerable mechanical modification to make a #1 capable of firing a rimfire cartridge.

A number of Gun smiths have modified #1 to rimfires.

Latest info from the Rugers Collectors Association there is no known factory rimfire #1

There's always the Westley-Richards 1897... But they are out of price range...

I would like to have back the 45x2 7/8 I built back in the '70's and sold. The original buyer passed away and I don't know who has it now.

I wish I had kept a 1-S .218 Bee for myself. We sold quite a few when we first started the business 12 years ago. Always wanted one but kept selling them. :(

I had one, "S" with 26" barrel....it was the most accurate No.1 I have ever owned... yeah... I sold it...

I'd be happy to see that if for no other reason than it will mean a new supply of brass and components on the market to help feed my Model 71!

Got this back from Jason Cloessner, at Lipsey's regarding a No.1-A in .348 Win;

"Hi,
We get an occasional request for the 348 Winchester.# Proof ammo is one of the biggest hurdles for doing obscure cartridges that haven’t been chambered in factory rifles in a while.# I am not opposed to a small run of 348’s, but it would be way down on the priority list right now with production time being at a premium for exclusive offerings.
Thanks, Jason"

I guess you will still have to scrounge for your .348 components...

i want a 30-30 but i dont think it would be a real 3030 unless it was a dirty ol model 94... between the 3030, 32winch and 44mag i think they are more along the lines of lever guns,
theres something inside me that sort of craves bigger cals like 35 whelens and such, 444 marlin, but the sensible side tells me similiar to BUM, that a 243-270 would be more suited!

i cant help but feel Rimmed all the way though :D

some nice suggestions and wishes on here

The ones pictured below are No.1-A .303 British, No.1-A .30-30 Win and No.1-S .45-70... either the .30-30 or .303 Brit will get sold off, but they both shoot so dang good I can't make up my mind which... and they have beautiful wood to boot. If you can find a No.1-S 22" C-barrel .45-70, I would dive on it... really nice carry/short range rifle. I just shoot mine with Speer 350 Hot-Cors... very nice for deer and bears, well, I guess for anything really. I have had a number of the medium bore No.1's, including; .35 Whelen, 9.3X62, 9.3X74R, .375 H&H, .405 Win, but I always fall back to a light No.1-A (22" P- ;)), in 6.5mm, 7mm or .30 cal (.311" also) and the .45-70 as a great pair of No.1 hunting rifles.

I have a RSI in 30-06, I just got a no1 b (I think) in 9.3x62 and I would love to have a RSI in 7x57 or 6.5x55 ... I would love that one to have great looking wood... one day I’ll find one!!

Your 9.3X62 is probably an "S" not a "B."

Canadian Tire local to me has a blued full stock #1 in 6.5x55. I already have several 6.5x55's, and certainly don't need another, but that one seems to call out to me every time I walk by it. Beautiful little rifle, and I don't dare ask to handle it, because like a puppy, it might follow me home.

WHAT? Canadian Tire have a Ruger no1 in there store? In 6.5x55? Damn... CT up here doesn’t carry any fire arms anymore!!

I hunted Saskatchewan deer for years with a No.1 in 7x57. Stupidly, sold it once I got a little Husqvarna 4100 in 7x57. Have since bought a No.1 chambered in "275 Rigby" - the 2" longer barrel has got to make it better, right?? - edging into 22" 280 Remington performance levels? However, turns out I still can not get my fat face down enough on the comb to be able to use the cool looking iron sights, and, at least for now, I am not willing to work down the comb height - I am too old to see iron sights very well anyways, and it is an absolutely perfect height for me with the Vari-X III in 2.5-8x36. With Nosler bullets from 120 grains through to 175 grains, it is a "coyotes to moose" rifle, in my mind!

WRT the 275 Rigby chambering. In a bolt gun, I think that would be the preferred chambering, over the 7x57 Mauser. My son has a Ruger #1 international in 7x57 Mauser, and because COAL is not limited to magazine length, I do not consider the longer throat to be detractor. After a bit of testing we settled on the 162 ELD-X, the 162 grain version. With a bit of component selection it shoots MOA for 3 shot groups. That bullet can be seated out and still have full neck support. The other bullet that we use is a Lyman 287405, a Louvrin design that works well in his #1.

I don't think that rifle will be sold any time soon. It has a story: My hunting buddy bought it used from Ellwood Epps, and when he passed on he left it to my son. He hadn't used it much, and to my knowledge he never harvested a deer with it. This year my son took it hunting. His goal was to harvest a Whitetail, a buck, with the #1, and use the Kinfolk hunting knife his grandfather left him to skin and process the deer. The quest was a success. The rifle is not pristine, the bore isn't shiny and overall it looks like it's been hunted. The knife has seen better days, it has a slight curve to it and we had to reprofile the blade to get an edge on it. It sharpens nicely and holds an edge.

The next project is to fashion a Kydex sheath for the knife, and look into a Timney trigger for the rifle. The Ruger trigger isn't very good, IMHO. A rather complicated design that take a fair bit of work to make it somewhat decently.

Personally I've owned several, and don't regret selling any of them. IIRC one was a 6mm Remington and the other was a 300 Win Mag. Back in the day they were priced to be competitive with the popular bolt guns, like the Rem 700 and Win 70. Today they are priced too high for what they are.

But to answering the question, probably 30-40 Krag. Or 303 British if one came my way.

I had and foolishly sold, a 300H&H, was a bit heavy, always wanted another one, this summer i picked up a 30-30 1A, with a 20" barrel, beauty rifle, small compact, shoots nice groups with irons, Got a skinner sight on order, and starting to play with 150gr ballistic tip, burned threw 200 125 gr ballistic tips i had laying around,
I like a second rifle in a full stock version, in a moderate cal, 6mm rem, 7x57, Nearly bought the .257 robbers that clay (prophet river) bought in this summer, held off due to uncertainty of work.

I don't know of a No.1-A .30-30 with a 20" barrel... are you sure that it is not a 22" barrel?
