Can I get a recommendation for a fun .22 for the kids please

I want to get a fun gun for the kids. Both my kids, 7 and 10, shoot my Browning BL22 and Cooey single shot but I would like to get them something more fun. An adjustable stock would be a bonus as they have very different arm lengths. Most importantly I want something reliable out of the box. Budget will be $500ish
 
The “MP5” type guns are cool and around that price.

Could do a 10/22 and a collapsible stock.

I’m working on a 10/22 SBR ultralight rifle for my kids. Will be over that budget but a cool kid sized gun when I’m done.
 
10/22 carbine in a promag archangel stock (several really nice styles so to suit various tastes)... most have adjustable LOP .. a few with adj combs so can fit a wide range of body shapes.

Should fit within your budget.

Avoid the Pietta PPS 50 (comes in wood, or some cool plastic stocks including muddy girl pink.) They are semiauto, cute and light and lots of fun, with some 20 plus round mags. We had 2 and they ran ok, but the issue is that they foul terribly about 2 inches ahead of the chamber and are difficult to clean. I sold ours because I was afraid of them actually fouling to the extent of obstructing the barrel. One time after a couple mag dumps by my son I couldn't get a .177 cleaning rod down the bore. The owners manual advises against rapid fire, so I think its a problem known to Pietta.
 
Marlin 795 is a good cheap reliable 22lr. Doesn't have a collapsible stock though. (LOP is 13.25", a bit shorter than some.)

What it does have is a last round bolt hold open, and available aftermarket 25rd mags. Can't say that about a 10/22.

As for the MP5-like guns, I hear decent things about their reliability, where they seem to lack is their construction (lots and lots of plastic, some really dont like that), and their accuracy is average at best from what I've seen online (although I haven't shot one)

What part of Something more fun did you miss? lol

All my kids are starting on a Savage Rascal, but the OPs kids already have experience with a BL22 and a Cooey.
 
This is all contingent on what direction their mentor wants them to go.
Is accuracy critical or is "Spray and Pray" "More Funner"?
Ruger has a bolt action with a modular stock.
My dad started me on a Cooey repeater and while I may have a couple of 10/22's accuracy is still an objective.

You could buy two guns: a Savage rascal and a Norinco scorpio. Or two scorpios and cut down one stock. Both options are under $500. There are threads on the scorpio on this site. Rascal weighs 3#,scorpio 5#

Not really interested in anything chinese, guess I should have started with that.

I can shoot ing my back yard, for that reason I'm looking at a 22 and not a bb gun.

Could look tactical or not, I don't really care but I would like an adjustable stock. My daughters short little arms are miles away from the 2 .22s I have now.

Do you have a preference on action type? Do you specifically want a semi? Bolt action? Would you be open to buying two guns?

LarryG's suggestions of a Scopio or two isn't a bad one - similar to that you could get a pair of Savage Mk II's for about $500 to avoid buying chinese, and chop the stock on one. Once that one gets too short, you could buy a Boyds stock for it. Or a Mk II and a Rascal if the little one is small enough for it (they're very small, fits my 8 and 10 year old pretty good but they're both small, 60lbs and a bit over 4ft tall)

Agree. Lucky for me, my son's always thought fun=accuracy. That's the shooting culture I got from my Dad, and passed along to him. For us, that means an Anschutz target rifle (bought used) and a CZ 452 (new). Heck, the CZ is even a repeater, with a magazine. 10/22s are such a bore (and they have such godawful triggers).
 
Henry lever action. It's a good way to learn how to use iron sights but you can also mount a scope later. 15 shots of LR and a light and handy rifle to shoot. I have a reflex sight now on mine because my old eyes can't work the iron sights very well any more.
