Usually factory barrels like Remington - Winchester - Sako etc have factory markings on the barrel where aftermarket barrels never have these markings they have the aftermarket barrel manufacturer's markings.

Other than a sales receipt there really isn't a way to say if it was longer or shorter than 18.5" when it was originally manufactured.

Basically if it is aftermarket there is no way for enforcement to prove one way or another that it was not manufactured originally and unless you have the receipt you can't prove it either.

I have quite a few barrels that were manufactured shorter than 18.5" both from factory and aftermarket manufacturers.

What I am getting at is when you get into argument with an officer you need something to prove your point. Someone saying on gunnutz forum "yeah it is legal" will not be enough.

When you have a factory made firearm with a barrel shorter than 457mm - you can show FRT. When you installed a short barrel - you can show what? Printout from this thread? Receipt from your gunsmith?

You can use the Firearms Act to prove it's legal to have such a barrel.
 
If your gun is over 26" an aftermarket barrel is not going to be a point of contention... there are thousands of firearms with aftermarket barrels... if you have hacksaw marks across the muzzle, you might have some "splainin'" to do.

Do you think that they would have missed regulating hundreds of gunsmiths across the country whose main business is screwing new barrels onto receivers???
