Surely someone here used it. Just wondering how it was, always liked the idea of it, kind of thinking if I have to reload maybe something more interesting. Was it/is it worth the hassle?
 
i have had two 8 mags. recoil is very sharp prefer shooting a 338 or 375. its a reloaders cartridge now. brass might be hard to find but projectiles aren't hard to find. its pretty flat shooting something i have found i don't need. prefer something in 338 or 35. still have a 325 but both 8 mags are gone. if i wanted a long range hard hitter the 8 mag loaded with 200 or 220 is the ticket.
 
I love mine. Enough so that I built myself a second one with a 26 inch barrel. I really like it. Kills like the hammer of Thor. 220 or 250 gr bullets between 2900 and 3000 fps works very well. Brass is still available, though not common. Easy enough to make from 375 H&H though. Usually needs a little neck trimming. I've owned quite a few various 8's, the Rem version is a great round. - dan
 
I've had a 8 rem mag since the mid 70's...killed a pile of game with it.

It can do a lot of damage with some of the softer bullets at close range on deer sized animals.
 
Got a m700 with smith fluted factory barrel and lightweight wildcat stock....foam recoil pad shootin 200g A-frames. Very nice to shoot and don’t even notice the recoil. Kills stuff pretty good.
 
I have a custom built 8mm Rem Mag. It is on a 700 LA Remington, and sports a 26"
Benchmark barrel. This cartridge is a hammer!! Shoots amazingly flat, and hits hard.

I drive 220 grain A-Frames to 3000+, and 200's to 3200. Recoil is brisk, and not for
everyone. A decent muzzle brake will tame it though. Reloder 26 is your friend, BTW.

Shot my elk last fall with mine. 220 A-Frame, 425 yards, elk never went 30 feet until
he was laying flat.

Brass is available if you keep your eyes open, or can be made from 375 H&H brass, or
300/340 Weatherby brass. Nosler also markets it, but a bit pricey. I love my "Big 8"

I have one, while I haven’t had any luck hunting with it yet, I have enjoyed it at the range. I guess I’m odd man out as I prefer it over the 338 and 375, to me it just is more comfortable and I shoot it better than the other large chamberings I have had.
 
I had fun with mine. The lack of 8mm bullets when it was introduced was a challenge. You could put tons of powder into it, it was not erratic at all.

However, the recoil was very much magnum, it is not a pussy gun. I made brass from 375 H&H, but did find it couldn't take the same loads without opening up the primer pockets. I look at the load data today and in reality, I was way over max.

But, all in all, not a caliber I will soon forget. I think I'd rather have a 416 Rem, and shoot cast bullets. I've tried one briefly and found it rather amusing to shoot a cast bullet that can outsmack a 30-06. Of course with factory, which I've never fired, it must be a brute.
 
Little searching tells me there arent many choices for brass, and even the cheapest remington i see is 1.50/round.
Thanks for the input though, might have to start looking for a donor action.
 
I have one I got from an old timer hunter friend of mine. He killed alot of elk with it. I just need to bed it into a new stock I have for it and it will be ready to kill another elk. I got a pile of brass with it, and stumbled upon 150 new rem brass, so im set there....
 
I had a 8mm briefly. I liked my 338, 375 H&H. Even a full power bordering overload with a 200gr in a 300wby better.

Something about that 8. It hurt.

.416 Remington uses 8mm RM case as parent cartridge. Have not checked OAL....

Agree, it is like a .340 Bee, lots of smack. I own 2 .338’s and a .375, so skipped this increment.

If I was hunting big bears, elk, Bison, I’d consider it.

Quoted for truth!! The 8mm Mag is a cartridge that is often overlooked due to several "reasons" [being 8mm, kicks too hard, uses too much powder, etc, etc]
However, I cannot think of a better Elk chambering, and It seems to be very accurate, complimenting the power it delivers. Mine will shoot that 220 A-Frame
into well under 1 moa right out to 500 meters. If I ever get drawn for Bison again, It will be the rifle I carry. Dave.
