Issue Solved. Thank You All

My 10/22 won't cycle the old 710fps CCI Quiet, but it mostly manages to eject and load the next with the new CCI Quiet Semi-Auto. That's after rounding the bottom/back of the bolt as shown in the above linked article, using a disc sander for the basic shaping then a block and several grits of sandpaper, then the buffing wheel with some green compound to make it shiny. Also cleaned up everything else on the bolt and wherever it contacts in the receiver, fair bit of hand polishing. CCI SV is the weakest thing it will cycle with 100% reliability. Wish it could do the 710fps stuff but so it goes, leave that for my bolt action rifle.

But for starlings in a barn I wouldn't grab the 10/22. Too loud, too dangerous to the roof even with 710fps 40gr. Bound to punch holes. I'd use an airgun, 20fpe in .22" if for beyond 20 yards or so, my little competition Pardini pistol in .177" if closer. With round nosed 8.43gr JSB in the Pardini I have no problem dropping rats with head shots, but on feathers? Actually might grab a mid-powered airgun for starlings... I have a 2260 set up as a PCP delivering an 18gr JSB with 10fpe, probably a nice compromise. Airguns in a couple of different power levels would be the toolkit for starlings and pigeons in barns for sure, just way quieter and safer for the building.
 
If you have standard steel roofing on your barn, I think you will still have holes.
I have shot shorts and still see a hole sometimes. I have used bird shot, but that crap needs a smooth bore to work.
I built a semi that would cycle CB caps, but that is expensive shooting these days.
 
Look for CCI Quiet Segmented.
They are same low velocity but break into 3 pieces on impact. They tend to not pass through as much(on squirrels anyways) and make a defined noise when you hit something.
 
I’ve had no luck in any semi....but I love the subsonic rounds, hear the firing pin, then bullet hit the marmot. Works great in areas where it’s not appropriate to be using a fire arm. Not that I’ve done that but thought about it. Not much if any quieter in hand gun though. Too bad.
